Thanks again Spider and Buzz for being fillers in Event 5 League 7!

It looks like there are still a number of PC tourney live teams (not fillers) in Event 5 League 7 that could still make the final 36 - especially with a good playoff run - in particular - mpcharette,Jr_Shark, ycbill, Schubertfamily, Carlerik, and kihoover.

We'll monitor this over the next couple of weeks to see if any of them are able to make a final push into the top 36, or whether they fall to the numbers game. For many of these players, it may depend on whether or not they can make the playoffs and make a deep playoff run. Before considering tiebreakers, by my calculation they would need to get the following points in Event 5 in order to make the playoffs (before considering tie-breakers - which could go for or against them):

mpcharette - 84 (just needs to go 35-25 in his last 60, or get some playoff bonus points)
Jr_Shark - 92 (including playoff points)
ycbill - 91(including playoff points)
Schubertfamily - 93 (including playoff points)
kihoover - 91 (including playoff points)
Carlerik - 77 (just needs to go 33-27 in his last 60)

As of Saturday night's games (December 13), there were 60 games left to play in Event 5 League 7. The regular season of Event 5 League 7 will end on Friday January 2/15. The playoffs for Event 5 League 7 will be done on Wednesday January 14.

So the beginning of the playoffs might be delayed until mid-January.

I'll post weekly updates on the playoff races.

Dr_Mark is also in the playoffs in Event 5 League 6. He currently has 346 points, 5 less than #36, GaryCook, who has 351. If Dr_Mark should win the championship in Event 5 League 6, he would then be tied with GaryCook, subject to the tiebreaker rules. As well, some of the players in Event 5 league 7 could potentially make the final 36, as noted in the quote above.

Tiebreak question-

I just pulled out a championship in my event 2 league, and by my calculation it finishes my total at 351, tied with GARYCOOK. In the tiebreak rules, #4 says 'regular season total wins'. Does this mean regular season wins in our 4 best event performances or total regular season wins in all 5 events we enter?

gbrookes has the final word on this, but this is his ruling on the same question from last year:

My ruling is that regular season games won includes the wins from all 5 events - otherwise it would never serve as any further use as a tiebreaker. On this basis, bertolett (424) had more regular season wins than chuckwonup (419), and bertolett gets the tie breaker and the 25th seed. Chuckwonup gets the 26th seed.

I'd think it would be from the four qualifying events, since the 5th gets tossed and the only reference to a 5th team in the rules was to gain bonus points, and provide ability to replace one of your previous four teams with a better record.

Given that there are already 2 players tied at 351 points, I'll express the following in terms of needing 352 points to make the final 36, since the odds of winning a tiebreaker get progressively worse as more players would theoretically be tied at 351 points:

mpcharette - 85 (needs to go 23-16 in his last 33 games, or get some playoff bonus points)
Jr_Shark - 93 (including playoff points)
ycbill - 92 (including playoff points)
Schubertfamily - 94 (including playoff points)
kihoover - 92 (including playoff points)

****
Carlerik - 77 (correction to my previous post - Carlerik is almost eliminated at this point - practically, he can't make it).

As of Saturday night's games (December 20), there were 33 games left to play in Event 5 League 7. The regular season of Event 5 League 7 will end on Friday January 2/15. The playoffs for Event 5 League 7 will be done on Wednesday January 14.

If you're in the final 36 already, please check in frequently here to monitor the timing of the playoffs starting.

I would add salmonbellies to the possible final 36 since he has a league leading 72 wins and 321 current points. By my (edited) calculation a 23 of 39 win run and championship would get to 352.

Meanwhile, Schubertfamily, JR_Shark, carlerik and I will be fighting for scraps in our division.

Gbrookes, I would like to add my two cents on the tiebreaker question. I believe very strongly that your ruling last year should govern the issue this year since no notice was given before this season of any intent to change the rules in the area. That's the very definition of procedural fairness; having objectively established rules that eliminate or minimize the Commissioner's discretion to make judgment calls. Otherwise, the league devolves into a popularity contest where somebody's axe inevitably gets gored.

If you are persuaded that an opposite rule should govern the tiebreaker situation (i.e., that regular season records from only 4 not 5 seasons should count), then you should announce a rules change at the beginning of next season that doesn't affect this one. On the merits I think the 5 season current rule is fine; it's more evidence of who performed better this year.

In thinking about this topic a little bit more, GBrookes' logic from last year's ruling seems sound:

If we take the case where a tiebreaker gets to #4 (regular-season wins), that would mean that the two (or more) teams would have been even on the previous three tiebreaks (the tie could not have be broken by tiebreaks 1-3). Thus, the teams had the same number of championships won, finals made, and playoff appearances. Thus, all teams involved have the same number of playoff bonus points. Since the teams were tied for total points that means that they must also have the same number of regular-season wins for their four best events. Therefore, logic follows that the regular-season wins tiebreak must be in reference to all five events entered otherwise it would never serve as a true tiebreaker and be pointless.

Shorter Marcblumberg: It's a meaningless tiebreaker unless all 5 events are included. I agree.
