How bad can you be LEAGUE FORMING

PostSat Dec 27, 2014 10:13 am

I use the CDROM game to host some single season and keeper leagues, and the concept of building the worst team looks like fun. I would be happy to host a league for this, free of charge of course since none of us want to waste $25 on intentionally building a bad team ;-)

I will sim the league using the CDROM game, 10 times, and compile all of the results to determine the best/worst team, and post the results on my league site - http://latorrer0.tripod.com/sombb/home.html

Rules:
1 team per manager
Each team must consist of 25 players with a total team salary between $79 and $80 million.
Each team must have position players carded to fill every position (no teams with catchers playing shortstop)
Each team must have 5 SPs, 4 RPs and 1 Closer
The CDROM computer generated manager will be run at the start of the sim over each team, HAL will be in charge of all manager settings.
Ballpark factors will be turned OFF
Injuries will be turned ON
NO DH - Pitchers will hit.
Balanced schedule

We can revise these as we go before we toss out the first pitch. There is no need for a draft, just submit your team with your lineup. The CDROM game allows for the same player to play on multiple teams in a league.

PM me if you are interested, I will send you an email address that you can submit your team to. Deadline to submit a team will be January 5th.

Hi Rob - belated Merry Christmas..........

This is a work of genius. All rules of human logic point to it being difficult to win with a team - so naturally it should be easy to "lose", right? Reminds me of the checkers version of "giveaway", if you ever played that.

I'm in - are we talking the 2013 cards? I may be missing a bit of detail with a quick read through, but whatever the particulars, this should be a great deal of fun. It'll be interesting to embrace what's most important...........horrible starting pitching, bad defense up the middle...........etc.

Take care,

Chuck

I love the spirit of this idea, but I think it misses the mark of what we were talking about in the original "How Bad Can You Be?" thread. (See my latest comments there).

In this situation, guys will have five $0.50 SPs and six $4 RPs, and 5e65 players wherever they can insert them. That alone is enough to "sabotage" a lineup. But sabotaging lineups is not what we were discussing in the thread. That's an ENTIRELY different thread!

Good point let's put some minimums on pitching and batting in terms of salary I'm traveling today but I'll put some thoughts out there later tonight

Maybe by making the goal to finish closest to 81-81, rather than with some kind of losing record. Then we might look at the 1-2 teams finishing with the worst records for closer inspection, to see if we can identify any trends or fallacious thinking.

I will think about this some more, because you are definitely on to something here. :D

I'm going to sacrifice a credit to try and draft the lineup I posted in the previous thread. If I can draft that in an auto league, I THINK it might be a good control...or maybe I'll just be proving a handful of players are overvalued? But then again, is the mispricing an element that could cause someone trying to break .500 to actually fail miserably (outside of salary dumps)?

The interesting twist to an 81-81 record winning the pool, is that if you find yourself at 70-60, how do you guarantee you only go 11-21 in your remaining 32 games? These actions would be definite indicators of what NOT to do in a regular league, if they do in fact cause you to slide. Would it be easier to draft a "great" team and sabotage it down? Would it be easier to just draft for pure mediocrity?

While these are all great thought experiments, I just wonder how much we could actually glean from it in the end... :?

I was an unenthusiastic student in my college stats classes, but I would wonder what sample size you would need to draw any reliable conclusions.

I was a Math-Stats major, and I know at some point I might have known, but beats the hell outta me now!
