Thanks for your comments guys.

I've thought it over, and agree that my ruling from last year should stand as it was, since there was no notice of any intent to change it.

I also think that, given the tiebreaker structure that we have in place, it's the only logical way to approach it. Otherwise, that particular tiebreaker would never resolve any ties.

Therefore, all 5 events will be considered for the tiebreaker test for total regular season wins.

Thanks for the input guys.

Tiebreakers
1. Championships won
2. Finals made
3. Playoffs made
4. Regular season total wins
5. No. of events played
6. Pick 3 winner

My thoughts looking ahead to next year...

The tiebreakers are flawed as they are written and here's why. The number of events played should not be included. If I get 350 points with four teams and opt out of entering a fifth team, how is that WORSE than you needing five teams (and a "participation bonus") to get 350 points? It's not, plain and simple.

I think the original intent was to reward the extra participation, not to unintentionally penalize the team that didn't need the extra participation. The unfortunate consequence, however, is that the four event team is unfairly punished here, though likely no one would have anticipated this in advance until the tiebreakers were fully tested.

In this case, if everybody played five teams, all five teams should count in the total wins (tiebreaker four, as noted previously, is redundant without adding the fifth team to the number of wins). That's how it was done last year, I believe, and that's how I think it should be done this year.

Run differential is a much better tiebreaker, and I intend to add it to the list for next year. You should never lose a tie-breaker to a Pick 3 except in only the extreme circumstance that you tie through the run diff tiebreak.

I thought similarly re: tie breaker #5. If the two teams tied with their top 4 team records, and tied down to regular season total wins, the team that played only 4 seasons will always lose tiebreaker #4 since their "5th" will be 0 and the team that played 5 seasons will have the benefit of the dropped 5 season's wins. But let's say, no if one team only played 4, we will call that a tie and go to tie breaker #5 out of "fairness.' Now the team that played 5 seasons wins by playing 5 instead of 4. But, the original tie only occurred because they played 5 seasons and got the 5 bonus points that enabled the tie in the first place, no?

I guess it is a matter of opinion and philosophy, but I think the goal is to have the best 32 managers in the semi-finals, not the most active. The 5 point participation trophy is enough of an incentive.

Merry Christmas

Update on Event 5 League 7 - 27 games to play -

Mpcharette has the wildcard by 2 wins, ycbyll and kihoover are leading their divisions. The playoff races are close, and the other top 36 contestants are still within striking distance of the playoffs.

mpcharette is into the top 36 already, and still going, having made the wild card spot in event 5 league 7.

Kihoover needs a sweep in his last 3 games and then to win the championship in order to make the top 36.

JR_Shark and cybill need to either win the championship, or sweep their last 3 and make the finals.

Tonight's games are important!

Ycbill and Kihoover are out, but JR_Shark can still make it if he wins the championship in event 5.

Congratulations! It looks like the shark leapt up and devoured the karp (or at least his chances for the championship).

Yup, looks that way. Might as well get your ballpark pick ready then, eh? We'll then just be waiting for mds6101 as the 12 seed. Geoff will no doubt check in later today with final final ruling..

By the way, I don't know that i like getting a red-hot champ coming in when the rest of us have been busy thumb-twiddling for some time now, lol
