Props to J-Pav

I was going to send a private message to J-Pav and give my compliments for creating some very interesting threads which have resulted in some very good discussion. But I decided he deserves the public outing on being a nice guy.

I always enjoy discussions with this poster because you can count on respectful replies and you can agree or disagree without any concern the discussion will degrade in to an insult contest. I never have to be careful when I comment on his posts because he will respond intellectually instead of going in to detail how stupid my opinion is. That can lead to me understanding his thinking better and occasionally even change my mind on a subject.

That is all a little too rare on the internet these days. Here is my virtual toast to you and thanks for making these boards a more interesting and fun place to spend time.

I would also like to give J-Pav his due. He obviously knows SOM and puts amazing amounts of time into his teams. I have definitely enjoyed his secret formula posts. I, however, have not had the pleasant experience dealing with him that Valen and others have. In our very first discussion about playoff points for the tourney, he responded to my very polite post with a disrespectful, extremely corrective post including this passage:

Professor!!!!!!!!!!! Your inability to grasp this can only lead me to conclude you're just funning with me for fun's sake. Your self-contradictory assertions are without foundation and lead me to believe you do not fully understand the basic definitions of "objective", "subjective", and "arbitrary" as used in this forum, as opposed to how they must be being understood in the faculty lounge!

This was not the type of intellectual, respectful response for which Valen lauded J-Pav. J-Pav did apologize to me for the post, but he has not been respectful to me since. He also feels someone who starts a thread can actually tell someone else to leave it. I strongly disagree with this and don't see how the forum can function that way.

Anyway, I do hope he has an excellent New Year's and am enjoying his current thread.

Agree completely. J-Pav does more in this game to encourage good discussion than anyone. And, better yet, J-Pav is a nice guy. He is always courteous and respectful (except in certain warranted situations). There is nothing more discouraging than posting your thoughts and being told in the next post "You're wrong...". J-Pav never does this. I look forward to the secret formula posts and all the positive things he contributes.

This just isn't true. I've seen J-Pav correct people and tell people they're wrong. He did it to me below:

Simply adding up all the wins (including playoff wins) for every player, as you propose, is itself a distortion of the player's accomplishments, since it neglects to recognize two of his most significant achievements--finals won and finals made. Those finals won and finals made must be included in a player's point total if that point total is to accurately represent his accomplishments; they are a natural requirement of that representation.

Everything stated here is unequivocally incorrect. Adding four numbers to get a sum is the definition of objective simplicity. That you go on to state that playoff wins neglect to recognize...wait for it...PLAYOFF WINS is incongruent. Then we have another dose of you saying "finals won and finals made must be included in a player's point total if that point total is to accurately represent his accomplishments" as if you just made a brilliant discovery! Eureka indeed! Did you even read this thread or did you just join us in the middle?

Now, J-Pav could have been more tactful in the passage above, but I don't fault him for (erroneously) correcting me. There is nothing inherently wrong with disagreeing or even correcting another poster if done politely. This is a forum for discourse, and discourse sometimes demands disagreement. If we can't disagree or sometimes correct people on this forum, then we'd only have an echo chamber. As can be seen above, J-Pav certainly wouldn't want that.
