Closer vs. R

PostTue Jan 06, 2015 2:24 pm

I'm not sure if I'm using the Closer vs. R role properly. Should this role be used along with the Closer vs. L role? Last night, Norm Charlton faced 3 lefties and blew the save. I probably would been better off using him as a righty specialist.

0 P.O'Neill 5 Double
0 2 A.Belle 1 Ground Out
1 2 W.Boggs 6 Fielders Choice
1 1 3 K.Puckett 3 Double
1 23 R.Palmeiro 0 Int Walk
1 123 M.Loretta 3 Force Play
2 123 B.Ausmus 4 Ground Out

What is the general purpose of these (Closer vs...) roles? Do these roles help ensure the closer comes into the game to face batters that favor the closer's strength side?

I'll be curious to see someone's response who has used this role with success.

I never use the role myself. I also rarely use righty/left specialist roles. I'm not saying they are bad roles to use, just that they are not my style.

I don't think this works the same way as LH/RH specialists, where they pitch to one batter, or a few LH batters in a row and come out.

If I use a closer vs R/L role, I list it below my main closer if he is tired and I don't have a decent secondary closer---if a LH hitter is up, he will put in the Closer vs L, but will leave him in vs the next batter, even if he is RH, so make sure he is not awful vs the opposite side.

*This was a 24 team, $60 mil league

It works when you have a cheap R/L balanced reliever with a C rating to backup main closer. On this team I had Hawkins as closer (no other settings except don't use b4 8th inning), and Cook as RH specialist and Closer V R (Quick hook, avoid LHB). 4 of his 6 saves were 1 batter. It couldn't have worked out better... but still missed playoffs by 2 games....

Perhaps the rolls were off the hitter's cards? Can't tell here. Is this a mystery team?
