Not sure I understand the total number allowed, is that regarding the primary position of each player?

I have the same question.

I assumed it was the position the player was going to play at, but could be wrong.
I also would prefer a DH league but not a big deal.

That's a good question Mike. There are players like Wheat 25 who are terrible at their primary position (LF-4) but good at a secondary position (RF-2) and how to rectify this situation so that we have truly poor defenses is good question. I'm open to suggestions on this one. Any thoughts?

We could do a DH if that's what most people want. I feel strongly both ways.

Let's see, as I remember the last bad d league, there was a infield (1b+2b+ss+3b) total number, something like 13, and c and of had to be 3's or worse. So you could draft Henry Aaron, but had to play him in the infield, or sombody who was a 1 at their primary position, but you had to play them at their secondary position for which they were poor fielders. Of course you were not allowed to designate late inning defensive replacements to improve fielding, but HAL's choices couldn't be controlled.

I would think infield is 13 or 14 combined
with 13 you can go 4-4-4-1 to get a glove at SS or 2B, with 14 you can do no better than a 2 at any position.

Outfield total would be 9 or 10 combined
with 9 you could get a 1 in CF, with 10 you will have a 2 or 3 in CF.

Catcher is a 3 or 4.

I don't know about bench players. How do you stop someone from loading up on light hitting, good fielding backups and hoping HAL uses them? Or using them when injuries occur? If you have Aaron at 1st and your OF gets hurt so HAL puts Aaron in the OF and a good glove at first is that what we want? Or do we make a 'gentleman's agreement' to adjust lineups during injuries lasting a series or longer so this doesn't happen?

We could make backup's have to be a 4. That would really make an injury sting.

Suggestions and musings.

A player counts as his BEST rated fielding position. That way, you can't play Bench at first, cause HAL will immediately pinch hit for somebody just so he can jigger your defense and move Bench behind the plate. To take the Wheat example, he counts as a 2 (best rated fielding position).

I also prefer a DH (less HAL messing with things).

I have done this a couple of times, and we've done 2 different ways.

1 - No player rated better than 3 at ANY position is allowed. In other words, 3s, 4s, and 5s only.

2 - You 8 position players (excluding pitchers) must total at least 25. You can have one, and only one, ''1" rated fielder.
Your SS+2B combo must total 5 or more (2 at one and three at the other, or 1 at one and 4 at the other).
None of you backups plus HAL fiddling can make your defense total less than 25.

How about this: It incorporates two or three of the ideas. 1. The eight position players can't add up to less than 25-28 as rated at their best position(we'll decide on a number. I prefer the higher but we can hash this out) , 2. no bench player less than a 4 (unless you are working a platoon and you would have abide by rule 1. in any case.) 3. DH
Thoughts?
