Strange stat: Stan Hack steals 43 bases

Stan Hack (1941) is only a (C) *3/7/- (15-6) for stealing. Yet he stole 43 bases in this season below! Go figure

I had steals set to normal. Nice year overall from the Hack.

Where was he in the lineup?

A couple of teams in your division were pretty vulnerable to the stolen base, looking at catcher arms and pitcher holds.

One team was going +2 or +3 vs SB given any possible combination of SPs and Cs, and was 286 - 80 vs the SB --pretty awful. Another divisional team allowed a 246 - 90 SB rate—also not exactly great.

Some of the other teams in the league also had weaknesses vs the SB. Against these teams, Hack's stealing ratings might turn out to be pretty effective.

Overall you were 256 - 90 for SBs, so you were making a lot of attempts, often against vulnerable clubs, and stealing very successfully.

I like the fact that Hack stole for Hack, btw.

Yes, Hack overperformed for Hack!

He was batting sixth most of the year, though some injuries put him occasionally near the top.

The '41 Dolph Camilli card is also like that. He's rated a D stealer but every time I've used him he puts up double digit steals without aggressive settings. I don't think SOM has the steal ratings programmed right for some of these cards.

Well, there are some guys who aren't "volume attempt" basestealers, like Derek Jeter or Jeff Bagwell, who pick their spots carefully and have a high successful steal percentage. I think Bagwell's 94 rating (*4,6/- 18-12) indicates that he wont try often, but, when he gets a good lead, he will most likely be successful. Hack seems similar to that.

For guys like that, I leave Steal More and Don't Steal blank on the Hitter Prefs. (I never set Stealing to Aggressive on the Team Strategy Page.) That way, if Bags gets a good jump, he will be successful. On a team in the playoffs now, Bagwell stole 20 and was caught twice using this setting.
