Diamond Dope lineup evaluator

PostSun Jan 04, 2015 10:07 am

Curious if anyone is aware of any discussions past or present about adding a pitching staff evaluator to diamond dope?

There have been past discussions of adding a pitching evaluator to diamond dope, but the programmer hasn't done anything about it.

What does a pitching evaluator do? Is this something that just grades your starting rotation?

If you are familiar with Diamond Dope it calculates the exact probability for every outcome on any given player's card (if not, go there it's a very helpful site). The lineup evaluator creates a team composite of all those individual outcomes (ie; 2B's,3B's,HR's, AVG,OBP, SLG etc.). This gives you an idea of your overall team's projected performance (from rolls on the hitters card). Currently there is no comparable evaluator for your pitching staff as a whole. Actually, if there ever was one, it should be two different set of numbers; one for your starters and one for your relievers (so as not to unfairly weight the relievers numbers). but alas it doesn't sound like this idea has ever gained any traction. True to SOM's offensive preoccupation.

With deference to the esteemed Diamond Dope webmaster/programmer, I would be happy to code this! It would be a fun project for me.

I could put this together very for any season that I have a ratings disk for, but how would it be done for ATG without a ratings disk? Last check I have ratings disks for all season from 2003 - 2014 from SOM and 1970-1998 from SOM icon Mr. Guzzo.

What type of functionality would you like to see?

Rolled up chances for all possible results, prorated based on rotation order and SP*/SP for GS over 162 games? Any ideas on how to factor in RP?

This has my programmer wheels turning!!!!

Love to see the community stepping up! If you look at the lineup evaluator currently at DiamondDope.com, I envisioned the same layout/information. With one section for starters and one for relievers. The user inputs the players and the program pulls from the cards already in Diamond Dope. The totals are a straight average of the player's numbers in the lineup. I know this is a fairly simple approach but it would provide useful information compiled for the gm's without having to do the calculations themselves. Then adding or dropping a pitcher(s) from your prospective team and seeing it's effect would be an easy task.

There also used to be a great function that evaluated a team's lineup against a starting pitcher (presumably it was 50% to hitter and pitcher cards). Would love to see that added back if anyone was so inclined to enter the data.

prjr and jfreeman, thanks! good start for design. I don't have the relationship with SOM that Diamond Dope has, so individual card info would be hidden, but the compiled could be shown.

Any interest in R/L splits or total only (at 50/50 or 33/67 weighting)?
