It's been brought to my attention that....

PostWed Jan 07, 2015 5:10 pm

I'm posting this to make full disclosure to the group of semi-finalists.

It's been brought to my attention that....there is a question as to whether the seeding/assignment of the top 36 to each of the 3 semi-final divisions could either be as I have done it (straight turn assignments, like eenie meenie minee mo), in order, or whether it should be done on a serpentine basis.

For example, on a straight turn basis semifinal league 1 would include the following player rankings (as I have done it):
1,4,7,10,13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34

Alternatively, on a serpentine basis, it would be:
1,6,7,12,13,18,19,24,25,30,31, 36

In all honesty, I did the postings this morning working fairly quickly, to get the sign-ups and drafts going quickly. I don't think it makes much difference, in real substantive terms.

My preference would be to leave it as I have done it. (J-Pav can do it differently next year, if he chooses, as the new commissioner for the 2015 PC tournament).

I checked the rules for this year's turnament, and the rules appear to be silent on the seeding for the semi-final leagues. For full disclosure, I will say that it was done on a serpentine basis last year. I would like to exercise my discretion to do it on a non-serpentine basis this year - I.E. the way I did it, earlier today.

Are the divisions randomly assigned by autodraft?

No. We will assign divisions in a serpentine way, as follows (using league 1 as an example):

East
1
16
19
34

Central
4
13
22
31

West
7
10
25
28

This will (I think) provide some appropriate advantage to the top seeds in the tournament (i.e. to reward them for their tournament event success).

Gbrookes:

I respect your authority to make this decision but agree on the merits with JPav that serpentine league seeding is the better rule. By placing team 4, 7, 10 etc in team 1's league it actually takes away from the advantage that seed 1 should get for dominating the regular season (Evs 1-5). Team 2 gets, on avergage, lower seeded competition than seed 1 because they play 5, 8, 11 etc. It's not a gigantic thing, but it's a thing.

But again, you work very hard as commissioner and put a lot of time into this and I respect your ruling.

And should add that I respect overall the fine job you've done on commish the past couple years. Glad you're getting a break next year!

For the record, I'm seeing this for the first time just now.

The top 36 managers are generally so close in ability that I don't really see it as a big difference one way or the other. If someone sees it otherwise, please speak up so I can plan accordingly for next year.
