Hal leaving PR in the lineup

PostThu Jan 15, 2015 9:50 pm

Hi all, This is my first mystery card league, so pardon my ignorance if there is any.

I have 1980's vince coleman listed as a pinch runner in my strategy. The last couple of times he has been used the computer manager will leave him in the outfield, taking the place of a better offensive and defensive player. It has done this late in the game even when I had the lead. Is there something I'm missing to make HAL take him out of the game completely after pinch running? Should I just leave all strategy settings blank? I only have coleman as a pinch runner and a second baseman that would come in for defense.

On one of the games, where it was tied in the 8th, he pinch ran for my catcher and scored a run. The 2nd catcher came in the next half inning, but instead of leaving him in the catcher's spot he replaced my left fielder's spot and kept coleman in the catcher's spot....this created a chain reaction where HAL had to move my third baseman to first (a worse defensive rating and took the place of a better defensive player) and a bad defensive bench player came in to play third.

This is a tough one. Try clicking the box to remove Vince Coleman for defense sub, on the hitters prefs. See if that removes him without messing everything up. Otherwise, try going to the team strategy page and putting a couple of your great fielders in the defensive subs so they stay in there (or come in the game). Anyone else have any ideas?

You have to think of HAL as the likable, but not very smart bench coach/former fringe player who has been with the team for 30 years and you're stuck with until he decides to retire. You run back to the clubhouse bathroom for a few moments and, upon returning, find he has done things like inserting Vince Coleman in the outfield.

At other times, repeat the above statement, but this time replace "bench coach" with "pitching coach".

Of course there were times, back in the day, when I'd have a team that was so bad, I'd turn it over to HAL and watch from the cheap seats. On a few occasions his record was better than mine. Since strat has clamped down on HAL setting lineups, that doesn't work anymore.

My favorite story involved a theme league where one manager went on a week-long vacation without internet access. HAL took over and led the team to the playoffs. Remember that, FAaron?

Funny stuff. I used to think Hal was like the junior high baseball coach who would somehow try to find a way to get everyone into in the game at some point.

Thanks! I was thinking maybe it was because the outfielder or first baseman had a bad card and Coleman is on his good card, but that shouldn't matter with a lead and needing defense over offense. I will try your suggestions.
