Top 10 second basemen right now

Pointing out the flaws or inaccuracies in someone's statement is correcting it, and that's fine. As I said, unlike others, I have no problem with disagreements or corrections. We can't have discussions about MLB, SOM, or MLB players without them.

As to your list of players, I grew up with them as well...although I only saw Morgan as a kid. Those guys were all awesome, and I don't think any list of 2b's will ever match up to them again.

Niners: I agree that there isn't much difference between Gennett and Murphy, but I evaluate Gennett's defense to be more average-y than iron glove awful. He's clearly the weakest guy on my top 10 list and plausibly could have a worse season than several guys off of it, Murphy included.

This discussion is interesting since Murphy and Gennett are strikingly similar players, both offensively and defensively. They're both LH-hitting second basemen with some pop, who hit better than they get on base...although Murphy has a tinge more speed.

Last year Murphy hit: .289/.332/.403 with 9 hrs and 57 rbis.
Last year Gennett hit: .289/.320/.434 with 9 hrs and 54 rbis.

Defensively, Murphy had a .974 fielding pct. with a 4.39 Range Factor and a -1.0 DWAR
Defensively, Gennett had a .981 fldg pct. with a 4.37 Range Factor and a -0.4 DWAR

So, the two were practically interchangeable with Murphy getting on base a tad better and showing more speed, and Gennett slugging a tad better and playing slightly better defense. So, neither one is decidedly, or even markedly, better than the other.

Can't say I've watched Gennet play a whole lot so I can't speak to his game, make up etc, but Murph is what you'd want ball players to be. Humble, hardworking, always does his job with no complaints or grumbling. Plays hurt and does the little things, advancing runners, hitting the other way, etc. Unfortunately, defensively, he's probably better at third, and is miscast as a second baseman, but there's no way the Mets are moving Wright off the hot corner and after the last year of Luis Castillo he's been the Mets everyday 2b and worked hard with the coaches to learn the position and improve his defense. In short, if you had a young player looking for someone to emulate, you'd be hard pressed to find a better guy than Daniel Murphy.

I'm sure Murphy is a standup-guy, and my comparison above showed he and Gennett are both solid, if unspectacular, players. I'm sure, however, you don't get to keep a name like "Scooter" by slacking off...

I suppose that's true. Not trying to disparage Gennet ( or your comparison either Strether) simply building a case for my guy for those who may not subject themselves to watching the train wreck known as the Mets the last few years.

Speaking of bright spots, look out for Brandon Nimmo. He's a five-tool center-fielder and arguably the best player to come out of Wyoming in 40 years, whatever that's worth...

No need for the heads up on Nimmo, been waiting for his arrival for a few years now. Not sure if Lagares will force a position switch for either Nimmo or himself. Or if the FO will look to move one of them. But it will be nice to actually have the problem of TOO many good players, not a problem I'm used to having.

As Mets fans we heard about Jefferies for years before he came up.

I refuse to get excited about anybody in the farm system of the Mets anymore...
