Clutch ...

PostMon Mar 09, 2015 9:01 am

Interesting stat on this all clutch hitting team:

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1393030

Between Eddie Collins (+7 clutch) and Ty Cobb (+9 clutch) in 1436 plate appearances, they only had 1 clutch hit between them.

Basic math says they should have rolled their card the clutch possibility about 26 times during the season and ONLY ONE TIME were they actually in a clutch situation ... Holy Cow.

On the year, 38 clutch outs turned in to hits. Not bad.

Is it possible......
Non DH league so for Collins to hit in a 2 out runners in scoring position the pitcher would most times have to come up with one out and bunt the runner over. That is assuming most pitchers are not going to be swinging away and advancing runners with hits.

Cobb hitting third is never going to hit in clutch position in first inning.

If one of the 3 speedsters gets on and steals second with the other 2 making outs then cleanup hitter gets a shot. If 2 of those first 4 get hits then 5th place slot gets a clutch opp.

Most likely batting order spots to get clutch opps are 4th, 5th and 6th. I only checked one game but those slots ere filled you Young, Aparicio, and Donlin. Coincidentally the top 3 on your team in clutch opps. Though a bit surprising it was as extreme as what your team results show.

Might be worth keeping note of on teams where you are mixing clutch.

The rule of thumb I recall was 5 & 6 hole need to be your clutch guys. Clearly makes sense no clutch in 1st inning for Cobb. But it was amazing that he had 0 clutch hits all year long.

The last clutch team I did had 49 clutch hits on the season and each of my 8 regulars had at least 3 clutch hits. That's why it was surprising to see only one total from the both off them, especially since they have a pretty high clutch rating.

I agree over 162 one would think it would be a factor at least once no matter where they hit in order.

I wonder how many times Cobb got the IBB in the clutch

I always thought that a "clutch" player was IBB in a clutch situation with a non-clutch player behind him (but then again I'm probably wrong about this). If this were so, then with a team of only "clutch" players, we might imagine that his team would receive very few IBBs.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I would expect the logic to be a little more complicated than just the clutch values when it comes to IBB decision.
It has to also consider quality of hitter to some extent and I would expect that to be the primary deciding factor.

I wish the game kept track of the + hits when a pitcher is holding a player on. I would think there would be more of them. A lot of cards have them on the 6, 7, or 8 spot. I think that can occur a lot more frequently.

If you are referring to the gb()+ reading there is nothing to keep track of. The + is ignored because under the super advanced rules we use the extra hits from holding a runner on is reflected out of the fielding chart adjustments. So as I understand a gb(A)+ results in a double play, not a single.
