Don't know about Lamanna, but Strat fan is the ratings book, it's the same thing, just used to be published third party and Hal brought them on board into the company sometime in the late 90's.

LOVED strat fan BTW, quarterly little fan mag with new rules, ideas for card sets, for al 4 strat sports. Brought a lot of innovations to the football game that are now in use in the complete rule book.

Yep, Glenn Guzzo, incredible passion for the SOM games. I was able to pick up ratings disks for '70-'98 from him years ago, all done manually. NOW THAT IS COMMITMENT!!!

I can create them from screen captures for ATG from the online site, 3 clicks per card (cut/paste/commit), but there is NO WAY I could ever find the drive to do it manually, let alone for 28 seasons!

The cards and dice guys are a different breed, and I mean that as a sincere compliment.

For the Baseball think Factory ratings--these are relative ratings but accurate ones generally.

In the SOM ratings guide, add the players obpct, and total bases for a offensive rating--then subtact the H-E + TB in the per G column from the Think factory ratings--to get an accurate assessment of a player at the chosen position relative to another player at that position.

The offensive numbers are relative to the 216 chances on every AB--in other words Figgins has 52.55 chances per 216 each ab off his card vs RH pitching of getting on base + whatever the pitcher allows on his card, which includes the fielding.

The Think factory defensive ratings are the same, except fielding x chances allowed are multiplied by 9--as a defensive player will face roughly 9 batters in the field for every ab he gets offensively (especially if he bats in the middle or the lineup)

I did full card reading/counting when I first started in my face to face leagues in the 90's. It's to time consuming. I want to know EVERY card, all 800+, I leave no stone unturned.

I will NEVER go back to hand doing/reading cards.

And one other things this thread has done, kept my mind off the dumpster fire that is my favorite football team with all the news/rumors coming out of Santa Clara the last 36 hours or so, and the sanctions against my hometown Syracuse Orange and what that will mean for Boeheim's legacy and the team going forward.

As I've said before, I don't count cards and never have. The thought of such tedious drudgery alone frightens me. Reading cards probably takes me less time to analyze a player than it does for those using ratings guides. I also eventually know every player, but definitely not in my first few leagues. Judging from the additional mathematical analysis some of you do for each player, I imagine you unturn a few more stones than I. However, I still manage to develop a pretty good knowledge of the players without it. Like you, my time is already stretched, and I don't have the time for such effort.

However, it seems we're both happy with our methods. Someday, despite your reservations for the public leagues, it will be cool if we could match our methods and see how they come out...
