"Better Card" Additions

PostSat Mar 28, 2015 6:15 pm

I am more interested in PLAYERS than cards. Maybe because I play many Franchise leagues and tend to play 80-120m caps when not playing franchise leagues, but I want to see some players who deserve a better card than they currently have.

How about Rusty Staub's 1969 card? 1980 Bill Buckner? 1937 or 1938 Harlond Clift? 1937 Dick Bartell? 1989 Lonnie Smith? 1945 Tommy Holmes? 1977 Larry Hisle? 1976 Bob Watson? 1978 Dave Parker? 1991 Bobby Bonilla? 1944 Bill Nicholson? 1971 Willie Davis? 1952 Hank Sauer? 1950 Earl Torgeson? 1961 Joe Adcock? 1971 Willie Montanez? 1986 or 1991 Joe Carter? 1993 Carlos Baerga? 1947 Grady Hatton? 1979 or 1983 Larry Parrish? 1983 Lloyd Moseby? 1971 Bill Melton? 1970 Cesar Tovar? 1977 Dan Driessen? 1956 Charlie Maxwell? 1972 Lee May? 1937 Beau Bell? 1989 Howard Johnson? 2005 Michael Young? 1960 Pete Runnels? 1960 Bill Bruton? 1968 Glenn Beckert? 1993 Lance Johnson? 1954 Granny Hamner? 1959 Harvey Kuenn? 1936 Joe Kuhel? 1941 Nick Etten? 1989 Fred McGriff? 1993 Lance Johnson? 1940 Rip Radcliff? 1975 Jorge Orta? 1963 Tony Taylor? 1953 Mickey Vernon? 1933 Don Hurst? 1926 Johnny Mostil?

Pitchers: 1978 Doug Bair, 1984 Charlie Lea, 1958 Ryne Duren, 1990 Bobby Thigpen, 1991 Mitch Williams, 1986 Danny Cox, 1996 Jeff Brantley......

If you play high caps, these additions probably wouldn't interest you. Again, I'm more interested in the players and the history.

This is one reason I'd like to see a 5-year waiting period like the Hall of Fame for adding cards. There are some great cards from 2010-2014, but they aren't going anywhere. Let's fix some of these first.

Please don't forget the 1953 Mickey Vernon, who would help make the poor Senators more competitive.

Sure Tom. And those are just the hitters. There are quite a few players who had long, successful careers who have a very substandard card.

This is an excellent point and a great list, Andy.

Prefer the '78 cards for Hisle and Parker, and maybe '87 for Ho Jo. We also desperately need a better Jim Bottomley card ready to play with in the next eight weeks! This should be blog-boys highest priority!!

I really want some more talent at C and 3B.

Javie Lopez had a monster year in 03 (1.065 OPS), and HoJo and Glaus would be great additions as well

We need to make sure they don't give us Sunny Jim's 1928 MVP season until AFTER the next 8 weeks.

I guess anybody that's played ATG has at least one "why's this the best they've allowed us for this guy?" questions. For me it's been Omar Vizquel from day one. I'm not saying he necessarily deserves more than one card in the set, but if he only gets one why use one of the SF years? Many of his Cleveland seasons are better - and more representative of his usefulness. Why not one of the cards from 1996-99?

Let me say I want to keep the upper cards the upper guys. I want Ruth and Williams and Mays and Maddux and Walter Johnson to be the top dollar cards. I don't want some outlier (Brady Anderson) or small sample size card (Gates Brown/Roger Freed) to make its way close to the top of Mt. Olympus.

But I DO think there are some nice midrange improvements in the list I posted above.

I happen to like the 60-80M lower range players, there's lots of talent in the upper range leagues to fill rosters like spending 10M each on a couple players and still have enough left over for adding Maury Wills. In the last nomination, I was going to submit 1977 Roger Freed (going against the grain) just to see if he would get many votes. I happen to like Billy Grabarkewitz better. (Just so happens I was looking at my old 1970 SOM cards recently and found him. Pretty good card too). I'd also like to see in the next addition pitchers who would fit into a 5-man rotation, (Max Lanier, Babe Adams, Slim Jones, and Guy Hecker quality type pitchers. Even some of the lower bums like Sid Fernandez).

What's the next poll addition going to include?
Players who have cards, but wish they didn't?
Players who still don't have cards?
Players who don't have cards, but don't want them?
Players who have cards of their next door neighbor's wife?

There will be other additions.... starting NEXT MONTH AGAIN!!! :D :D

Sincerely,
Delivery Boy...
