Charlie....Here's Where this game is Flawed!

PostWed Apr 08, 2015 11:35 pm

Going up against a +6 pitcher catcher combo PLUS SIX....Ashburn, O'neill and...wait for it... Duffy... all get thrown out stealing... Ashburn and Chino did get a steal each.... so against +6 I go 2-5 in sb attempts.

Now bad luck...poor lead...field was wet...super advanced rules...it doesn't matter to me...it's a game that is just MOSTLY LUCK.....Because you simply CAN NOT game plan this stuff...I mean the few controls we have and then there is ALL KINDA crap...unknowable crap...black box nonsense that goes on here....and maybe I'm not being clear here....it is MY (only me) personal opinion that when you go up against the WORST SP/C COMBO THIS GAME ALLOWS....THE WORST...READ THAT AGAIN...THE WORST AS NOT CLEARLY DEFINED ANYWHERE ON THIS SITE...good to better than good base stealers get caught 3 of 5 attempts....It just should [u]NEVER happen that way....I mean the adjustment in the rating IS THE WORST THIS GAME ALLOWS....the worst in history of holding runners on and throwing runners out can nail 3 of 5 better than average base stealers....ACCORDING TO THIS GAME.... IF THE PITCHER ROLLED THE BALL UP TO HOME PLATE ....AND THE ONE LEGGED CATCHER KICKED IT TO SECOND BASE ...."THERE'S A DECENT CHANCE THE FAST RUNNER MIGHT STILL BE THROWN OUT!!!!!!

now in ATG8 I'm winning at a .559% so it's not about poor me can't win...it's about WIN OR LOSE this game is mostly crap....imho.

The most it can ever be is +5. While I empathize with you, I feel the compelled to defend the game. It's a dice game. I've seen some crazy shit on the crap table over the years too. This game can be frustrating, but I love it. Sometimes I step away for awhile, but I always come back for more.

Steve- I think the point is that the percentage does not reflect the correct action.
In other words- even if you always have a 5% chance of being caught (which I dont believe is stated anywhere, but have some recollection of this being the case) then how do multiple guys who have that percentage get caught on the same night? thats less than a 1% chance of EVER happening.

ok +5 so my opponent starts (true) a +5 Catcher and if paired with a +9 pitcher (I forget which guy was +9) the worst his rating gets is +5....and if +5 with whatever BS this game has got going on, can throw out "better than average base stealers" 3 out of 5 times... its a FUNDAMENTAL FLAW in the GAME!!!! IMO

Suppose , for example, they are all attempting to steal on their "back" number? If you're setting is aggressive steal, or perhaps paired with steal more, it is very likely that you''ll be attempting a large percentage of SB's on your back number.

So to understand ratings...STRAT says to my knowledge a -6 arm (Clemente, that one particular year) has got to be the BEST...the BEST OF THE BEST....BECAUSE THEY DON"T HAVE A HIGHER RATING!!!!

So the WORST OF THE WORST is a +5 Catcher....The absolute worst of possible rating for throwing....How can the absolute worst throw out better than average 3-5 times.....BECAUSE it's based on 1-20 probability so even the slightest odds are 5%...because they don't want ANYTHING 100% certain!!!!!!

NOW NOW NOW......The game automatically adjusts a million things INCLUDING changing one type of out (line out) to another type of out because the powers that be thought there were toooo many line outs!!!!!!!! BUT a NO ARMED catcher still has a 5% chance to throw out the fastest human alive!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT IS A FUNDAMENTAL FLAW IN THE GAME!!!!!!!!!

They have stated they don't want 100% certainty...ok fine....I agree....BUT we ain't in 1961 where the odds were solely based on 1-20 dice stuff....BECAUSE Bernie told us a few years back he COULD change "bunt less frequent" (we complained because we'd still see the occasional bunt attempt by Ruth) no "never bunt....NEVER BUNT....and he did...and we have much more control because of this.....so since they think it important enough to change from one type of out to another...ya know for added realism....why not, if you don't want 100% certainty...why not give us 99.99 why the super out dated and often unrealistic "Have a %5 percent chance" that the worse thrwing catcher in history can still nail Cobb 5% of the time....they can't BLACK BOX that percentage to something MORE REALISTIC

Assuming a catcher/pitcher combo with a combined rating of +6, these are the probabilities for those 3 players attempting a steal with a bad lead:
Duffy (1894) 1-15
Ashburn (assuming 1958) 1-13
O'Neill (assuming Tip) 1-14
Unlikely to be sure, but hardly the 95% certainty you're saying it is

corrected

Noooo.not my point.....my point is....

IF IF IF IF.....

IF it was the worst of the worst pitching/catching combo ever... as rated by Strat....up against the very highest base stealer in the history of the game ever....as rated by Strat....there would STILL BE a 5% chance that the Worst ever, could throw out the best ever, as defined by their rules......way unrealistic in my opinion.

ahh, I get what you're saying now. It's that always present 5% that you object to. I have to agree that it isn't statistically accurate. I understand why they do it though, game of chance so there should always be a chance albeit slight etc. I tend to agree with you, why not just make a 1-20 a 1-20. We have a 1-20 HR ballpark now, when ballpark ratings first came out they also had a max of 1-19 and a minimum of 1-1, so they came around on that one.
