POLL: Why do we play ATG?

Just curious what our primary motivation is in playing ATG.

i voted for option 2, but, in fact, i am more interested in a broad spectrum of players, even if some of them are a little marginal or their history, like Bostock or Grabarkewitz or Kenny Hubbs was too short for them to achieve HOF-level greatness

I totally agree Joe. Great people.

But I'm looking strictly for those three options.

Ditto regarding the friends aspect. I started a yahoo fantasy league with all players from the strat online world.
It is great. I give them grief on the boards here and they beat up on my strat and fantasy teams.

Voted for 2. I enjoy building the teams and learning about players I knew little or nothing about. As a life long baseball fan and player I even enjoy the outcomes despite the few qwerks of the simulator that border on insanity! I do treat the game like a math equation, but #2 is my main motivation for playing.

Like Joe, I have formed many vicarious friendships with Strat players over the years. But, like Andy, I love franchise leagues and am bummed at the fact that too many times we have to substitute players who never played for our franchise because (a) there are not enough legitimate players to fill out our team; (b) the cards on your franchise do not represent the players' best years; (c) not enough cheap players (particularly for a fifth starter) to fit under the cap without dropping a player or two we really need. So, even though I play many different varieties of the game, I picked No. 2.

I answered 2 as well, but I think it's only fair to point out that what the statement means can vary significantly from one player to another.

Without a doubt...history is my main motivation...always finding tidbits about certain players...like Moe Berg being a spy during WW II or Tony Boeckle dying from a car crash that he and Bob Meusel were involved in..or Ed Delahantey falling to his death between two drain cars over Niagra Falls...or Johnny Vandemeer pitching a no hitter in the 1st night game...or Frank Chance and Jack Harper feud...you get the picture...its why I love this game...or Elmer Smith hitting the 1st grand slam in world series history...or Jack Graney was the 1st player to wear a number even before they became official...that Ty Cobb never wore a number...great bar bet...you can give someone three guesses what his number was....
