Scouting reports

PostMon Apr 13, 2015 3:47 pm

Thought it might be interesting to go back and look at the scouting reports for a few players.

Guess who this pitcher was.

Following a 13-9 season and 3.19 ERA at the class A level a scout wrote this:
Small: good arm: ran out of gas: "Did not pitch good last 1/3 of season." And, fatally, in the notes column on the far right, Dyer declared that Maddux didn't have the arm strength to be a starter.

but early in his career he was hitting mid-90s with his fastball

In AAA he got this evaluation
Could be decent 5th starter for someone

During his rookie season in which he posted a 5.61 ERA.
Strong arm with good stuff. "in over his head" "needs one more year"Like his chances

Same scout the following year
But it's interesting to see what changed from the year before._____________'s fastball had matured to a 6 rating ("above average") his control gone from "well below average" to "average," and his changeup improved from "below average" to "above average," all in the span of 12 months.

in 1986 he was chosen for the Triple-A American Association’s top 10. He was No. 6, behind Ruben Sierra, Barry Larkin, Dave Martinez, Daryl Boston and Joe Magrane.
