Starting after relieving

PostSun Jan 11, 2015 9:12 am

There is a rule/game move that I don't understand, so I wanted to see if anyone here knew how this worked.

If a SP*/RP is used out of the bullpen, and then starts the next game, is he fatigued coming in? What if he pitches 2 in a row in relief? I would think he would have to be fatigued coming in at least in the second scenario but can't find the answer.

I had a starting pitcher get injured in the 1st inning of the 3rd game one night, so I burned through a whole bullpen, and then I wanted to start one of those guys in the first game the next night.

And I guess there is the vice versa question. This pitcher also serves as a vsRighty guy, so if I start him, will the computer avoid using him in that relief role for the next 3 games?

Thanks.

The following answers reflect my understanding...I'm fairly sure I'm right:

"There is a rule/game move that I don't understand, so I wanted to see if anyone here knew how this worked.

"If a SP*/RP is used out of the bullpen, and then starts the next game, is he fatigued coming in?" My answer - No.

"What if he pitches 2 in a row in relief? I would think he would have to be fatigued coming in at least in the second scenario but can't find the answer. " My answer - I believe he would be fatigued. I've never seen this happen though - see below.

"I had a starting pitcher get injured in the 1st inning of the 3rd game one night, so I burned through a whole bullpen, and then I wanted to start one of those guys in the first game the next night."

"And I guess there is the vice versa question. This pitcher also serves as a vsRighty guy, so if I start him, will the computer avoid using him in that relief role for the next 3 games?" My answer - after starting, the pitcher must then rest for the next 4 games after the start (3 games if he has the asterisk *). He can neither start nor relieve during those 4 games. If he did, he would be fatigued.

My additional comments:

If you designate a pitcher as a starter, either in your rotation or in your "per-game starters", then Hal will strenuously avoid using that pitcher in relief, unless Hal has no other choice. When I want to use a S/R guy as a reliever, but plan to use him as a starter sometime in the future, I avoid listing him as a starter in my "per game starters" until the very last moment. That way, Hal WILL use him as a reliever until his turn comes to start, in my plans.

Also, when a starter gets in injured and misses a start, Hal will use another starter if you have one available to start. If not, Hal will choose a "pure" reliever to start - usually a long-inning reliever with a higher endurance rating (2 or 3). In my experience, Hal then generally avoids using that reliever wherever possible until his turn to start comes up. And then of course, that reliever must rest after his start. If there is a long injury to a starter, that will generally take one of your relievers out of the bullpen and more or less exclusively use him as a starter, while the normal starter is injured and missing starts.

"Thanks."

You're most welcome!

PS - strat gamers call the computer manager "Hal", after the game's founder, Hal Richman.

Of course when some players refer to HAL in all-caps, they are also referring to the sinister A.I. from Kubrick's 2001. Considering the frustration often vented at "HAL," that is very often the case.

Good point! ;)

My experience in games where the whole bullpen is used up and nobody's left with a relief rating (hey tiabarber -- I used the word "relief"! please feel free to " 'bot' in" again) -- is that HAL always takes the next day's starter and puts him in, but then that guy starts the next game at F9 anyway

EDIT: "HAL always takes the next day's starter and puts him in"

I take that back -- just noticed counter-examples. Not the "rule" that I thought it was.

He should be fatigued, according to the rules. But he is not: it's a glitch in the online game.

"And I guess there is the vice versa question. This pitcher also serves as a vsRighty guy, so if I start him, will the computer avoid using him in that relief role for the next 3 games?" In my experience, a SP/RP who starts a game is not available for 3 games, bUt he is available in the 4th game as a reliever, regardless of the asterisk. But he can't start a game unless he is a *SP.

This said, like gbrooks said, for your starter to be available as a reliever, you must be sure that ANOTHER pitcher is in the default rotation section and that he's not up in the next upcoming games in the "per-game starting pitchers" section.

According to strat the HAL name comes from an uptick of the IBM acronym. They took the letter preceeding each in the alphabet.
H comes before I
A comes before B
L comes before M

As a side note when IBM first began using the acronym there was a legal battle because it was already being used by a much lesser known group: The International Brotherhood of Magicians. Found this out from a friend who is a member.

Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley Kubrick, and 2001:A Space Odyssey beat them at than one by over 30 years... ;)
