Since the 5th SP is morphing into a valuable piece of the puzzle let's go ahead and draft 8 regulars and 5 SP's before heading into AD.

From a player pool standpoint, if SOM just added pure RP card options for the pitchers already contained in the NeL set this concept would flow a bit easier.

A couple of points need clarification:

The $3 mil minimum 5th starter is not a valuable commodity. It is a pain in the butt. I know what Rosie is trying to accomplish here, which is to balance out the rosters, since the Nel card set has no $0.50 mil SPs, and to make sure that the major contributors on the NeL teams are players who played in the NeL, but it would have been so much easier to just let the NeL teams draft $0.50 mil 5th SPs from MLB, since they are merely filling a required roster spot at minimal cost and likely would not have pitched an inning anyway. Requiring all teams to have a minimum $3 mil 5th starter ignores the fact that the bottom rung of NeL pitchers is not worthy of being drafted, where the $3 mil minimum spent on SP 5 could be better used towards the other SPs or position players.

1. Under the draft 4 SP and 8 regulars model for $77 mil, we could spend as much as we want on starter 5, as long as it was $3 mil or more and it came out of the $23 mil set aside for 1 starting pitcher, reserves and relief pitchers and other player parameters and roster requirements were met. Now that the 5th starter is included in the 13 players that are to be drafted before going to the autodraft, it seems that only the minimum SP price of $3 mil has been added to the $77 mil for 8 regulars and 4 starting pitchers, now raised to 8 regulars and 5 starting pitchers for $80 mil. This is a major change to league parameters and benefits those who have already drafted cheapo starting pitchers. Under the $23 mil for 1 starting pitcher, reserves and relief pitchers, managers could spend as much as they wanted for SP 5 out of the $23 mil, as long as all other roster requirements were met. Under the new rule, $80 mil for 8 regulars and 5 starting pitchers, the money for SP 5 must come from the $80 mil devoted to the regulars and the other starting pitchers, so if a manager wants to spend more than $3 mil on SP 5, it reduces the money spent on the regulars and the 4 other SPs, instead of coming from the $23 mil for relief pitchers and reserves. I don't think that such was the intent of the rule change and I don't think enough time was used to think through the consequences of the rule change. Moreover, this significant change comes too far into the draft and can have a direct negative impact on draft strategy, including my own. I respectfully ask that you reconsider.

2. The rule summary says that all starting pitchers must cost a minimum of $3 mil. I don't think this is quite correct. All SPs 1-5 cost a minimum of $3 mil. SP 6 was never discussed. If I want to use a cheapo hard lefty or hard righty 6th SP who costs less than $3 mil because he would be effective against a heavily imbalanced lineup, I should be free to do so. Please clarify.

I think a couple of Rosie's answers to questions posted here need to be discussed.

So, since we are adding the 5th SP to our draft, then we can spend 80m on 8 hitters and 5 SPs, correct?

Rosie said yes to this, but in reality I think the answer should have been, no, it's still $77 million for your top 8 hitters and top 4 starters. Personally, I was planning to have a 5th starter in the $4.5 million range (still my cheapest starter) when I embarked on the 5-man rotation idea, and now this penalizes me by reducing what I can spend on my lineup,

I'm not sure this was answered directly, but it certainly shows an intent to circumvent the rules. I have considered the $77 million cap for top 4 SP and top 8 hitters to be a season-long roster requirement, not just a draft rule So, if you draft a SP after the initial phase of the draft and use him to bump a cheaper starter out of your rotation, you should have to cut salary elsewhere from your top 12 in my opinion.

Really, guys this is more like an $85 million cap league, which is necessary in order to match up with the salaries of the NeL players available.

There is no intent to circumvent the rules, but to follow the rules as they are written, just as I find no intent to circumvent the rules by using a 5 man rotation or platoons.

Morning All,

Ok some things to address...
My goal was to create a league where the $$ on the field is as equal as possible.

Easier yes, but the NeL have some guys that will contribute at that level and I didn't want to dictate a 4 man rotation to the owners.

So first off I did answer this question quickly as I wanted to keep the draft moving and I didn't think it mattered. Now that I see some other perspectives I should've given it a bit more thought. Actually my original intent was to require the 3 mil min for the 5th SP independent of the reserves and RP's, I ended up lumping them together to simplify the parameters. While I'm trying to take into consideration all roster possibilities there's obviously no way for me to predict all the strategies this group of seasoned owners is looking to employ. So in an effort to limit changes that are seen as unfair let's go back up and stick with the drafting of 4 SP and 8 Position players under the $77 mil parameters.

2. The rule summary says that all starting pitchers must cost a minimum of $3 mil. I don't think this is quite correct. All SPs 1-5 cost a minimum of $3 mil. SP 6 was never discussed. Yes that 10th Pitcher was something I was anticipating coming up. Agreed, if you choose to carry 10 then the last one can be a cheap SP that follows the under 2.73 mil parameter (and included in the 23 mil reserves)...as I see it they will be used as more of a specialist than SP. The NeL have a few of these and it should match up across the rosters.

It has always struck me as odd to have to draft pitchers without knowing what other teams and parks are in your division.

Damn BD yet another astute observation! Well it's better than a complete Autodraft approach as typically we have no idea what stadiums to expect.
