2nd Baseman Question

PostTue Apr 28, 2015 7:06 pm

If you were to pick a 2nd baseman off waivers who would you pick Cano, Altuve, or Dozier? I know it can depend on what your needs are. It is still in preseason so I can make any of these picks work. Who would you build your team around if you had to pick one. I know it may sound strange to build a team around a second baseman but for the sake of argument who would you choose. Thanks for your help.

I'm not particularly fond of any of them for the money. However, if I had to pick one, I'd take Altuve. He's done better than I would have thought his card would produce in a few of my leagues.

Given the BP I would take Cano with his HR chances against RHP.

Altuve is one of the worst overpriced card, and just get worst in power ballparks. I'm not impressed with the "Altuve" thread that makes a positive case of his use. Even if Altuve has on-base of .375, considering that his D will allow roughly 60 extra batters to the other team, he's not a good buy at this price tag.

Cano has 4 BP vs rhp and 1 vs lhp. Dozier has 4 BP vs rhp and 6 vs lhp. So you would expect that Dozier fits your ballpark better, and my ratings have it like that accordingly. Assuming that your away games are in all neutral parks, my ratings have it that Dozier is worth 8.08M and that Cano is slightly overpriced at 7.60M (even though I give a slightly advantage to lefties). Dozier is an ideal #8, #9, some on-base, some pop, great middle defense. But if you plan to build a powerhouse team, with 60M spent on offense, Cano could make a potential lead-off, he has a nice steal rating for leading off in your ball park and over 40 chances of on-base.

But if you can find a better leadoff than Cano, I would go with Dozier.

Dozier is TERRIBLE. unless you are facing 40% or more left hand pitchers, expect a sub .200 batting average and sub .300 OBP. I have him on a couple of keeper teams and would trade him in a heartbeat for Kendrick or either of the other 2 you listed given his abysmal performance. HE's the most over priced card at 2b not Altuve, I'd rather have Cano or Altuve despite Dozier's 1.

    Code: Select all

(Among players over 2M, these are the worse buys accroding to my rating. Next to last colum is the difference, in absolute, between the value of the card and the pricetag, and the last column is a measure that can be interpreted as the relative difference---the hit you take on the overall 80M cap, by choosing this player)

Price         Name      Pos   Run Value($)   Diff  Diff in%
                                Created       (absolute)  (relative)
    8 210 000   Yelich,C   7   40,02   $6,60   -1,61 -1,96
    4 460 000   Aybar,E   6   14,80   $3,58   -0,88   -1,98
    8 230 000   Altuve,   4   41,13   $6,50   -1,73   -2,11
    5 910 000   Santana,D 6   23,03   $4,56   -1,35   -2,28
    6 130 000   Zobrist,B 4   24,41   $4,73   -1,40   -2,29
    2 770 000   Stewart   2    4,56   $2,11   -0,66   -2,39
    2 680 000   Gonzalez   4    1,98   $2,04   -0,64   -2,40
    2 820 000   Blanco,A   6    2,43   $2,09   -0,73   -2,58
    2 620 000   Gordon,D   4    0,87   $1,90   -0,72   -2,73

This is from my ratings, all positions pooled, for ballpark values set Great American at home and HR=10/10 on the road. As you see Dee Gordon is the worst buy in this category in relative terms, his value being equivalent to 1.90$ instead of 2.62$, but in real values, the worst buy is Altuve, value of 6.50$ instead of his pricetag 8.23M, for a net difference of 1.73M---in my ratings, for GreatAmerican, that's the worst of all the set.

I agree that Dozier will end up in the low .300, perhaps .330 in Great American. But 30 HR, stellar defense, isn't this what you look for a 8th/9th hitter?

Compared to Altuve 41 Runs Created, Dozier has 55.8 RC and Cano 49.3 RC in my ratings, all set for the stadium ratings set as above.

As I said above, I consider Altuve--and Dozier and Cano--overpriced. However, calling him the "worst overpriced card" is both inaccurate and exaggerated. He provides excellent offense and outstanding speed. And the myth of the terrible defense of the 3 2b is just that: a myth. I, and others, have had many winning seasons with "3" 2b.

Here's a perfect example of what Altuve can do:

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS
153 672 98 251 50 5 10 62 39 77 55 20 .374 .410 .507 .917

I'd "overpay" 8.7 million for that from a "3" 2b anyday.

I have yet to be in a conventional, 12/$80M league where Dozier has ever been on a roster.

Might be my nod to the free market, but that suggests to me that Dozier, more than any of the other 2 2B mentioned, is over-priced.
