Pitchers stealing bases

PostWed May 06, 2015 9:00 pm

In the past month I have had Leroy Matlock try to steal three times. Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought pitchers only stole bases on the back end of a double steal or maybe with a failed hit&run.

Is this just a quirk of Leroy Matlock or have other pitchers been running wild also?

Yesterday, he was thrown out stealing third with one out when the batter was set to "do not bunt" and "do not H&R" and the team is set to conservative for SB. The only thing I can think is that it was an intentional steal. Why would this happen?

I avoid non-DH leagues, so I can't help you with what's going on.

But to answer you directly, it's because HAL hates you right now. It happens to everyone at times, and it will pass. :D

I e-mailed customer service about Tannehill trying to steal bases but they almost never reply to any questions sent to them. I sent my e-mail on March 21st, so I guess they don't plan on addressing this question either.

I asked the same question about Matlock stealing several years ago. Bernie replied that there were five or six pitchers who would steal. This was back in the ATG5 or 6 days so there may be more.
My next question was how Strats chose Matlock to steal and at what rating. There is a Negro League players encyclopedia that states Leroy was slow afoot.
I've have two other starters steal but darn if I can recall their names.

I do know this: Starting with the 1992 season SOM began rating pitchers for running and supplemental stealing. A list of all affected pitchers was included on the roster sheet. I would imagine that all seasons released after that would include the same - included the "Cadillac" re-releases.

At least I'm not the only one. Other than this, I like Matlock for no-DH leagues.

So is there any way to set Matlock to "do not steal" as you would for other players?
