Pitch count and Fatigue, Houston we have a problem

PostFri May 08, 2015 9:52 am

Stoney18 shared a link in another thread on fatigue and pitch count - http://somonline.wikia.com/wiki/Pitch_Count_Fatigue

Then in a league I am in one of our managers called out the following game, Scherzer throwing 171 pitches - http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/game/426885/66

There have been ZERO games with over 150 pitches thrown by an SP since 2000. Scherzer, in his career, has never thrown more than 127 pitches in a game. Granted in this instance it was an 11 inning outing, but if the game engine factors in pitch count, it needs to be adjusted. He didn't begin to fatigue until the 145 pitch mark (F9 to F7).

Since SOM prides itself on statistical accuracy, they should correct this. Now, we all know that there is no way that SOM will entertain a discussion on this or consider a fix, but I felt it was worth sharing since there have been great discussions on fatigue in other threads.

At a minimum, they should consider pulling a lever on fatigue and take it down a setting and use Super Advanced POW, witch disregards pitch count.

I agree. Pitch count if fine for CDROM leagues, where you have batter to batter control over your pitcher, but makes no sense for this kind of a simulation!

You can include the 'Super Reliever' strategy in this argument then too. I am in a league where 2 relievers are on a pace to throw 300 innings this season, I'm sure you have seen this also many times. 'Iron' Mike Marshall could pitch in over 100 games in a season but not 300 innings (just over 200 was his max).

Sherzer probably could throw 171 pitches no problem but in real life they do not want to get him hurt.

There is a Super Advanced Starting Pitcher Rest Chart that should come into play for Scherzer:

Super Advanced Starting Pitcher Rest Chart

* PITCHERS
IP - Days of rest needed
0-2.2 - 1 day
3-4.2 - 2 days
5-9.2 - 3 days
10+ - 4 days

non-*PITCHERS
IP - Days of rest needed
0-1.2 - 1 day
2-3.2 - 2 days
4-5.2 - 3 days
6-9.2 - 4 days
10+ - 5 days

But it looks like he is in a 5 man rotation anyway so I don't think I'll get a good idea if the online game uses this rule or not.

Robert, I don't think the above chart is used in the on-line game, but I could be wrong.
