I know it's partially some derangement syndrome on my part, but I am regularly trying to consider the very kind of thing you just mentioned. I've messed around with approaching it from the other side, too. Winning a number of rings gets you straight into the semis, that sort of thing.
I'm also mulling over a "Masters" field type of credentialing. That is, to play in the 2016 Tour, you need to provide a link to a league you won in 2015.
There is a very fine line between being too inclusive and too exclusive. There is also the problem of rewarding early wins while losing managers who fall behind to a subsequent lack of interest.
All in all, the format we use now seems to do a pretty good job of turning out a deserving tour champ, not to mention pretty deserving semi-finalists who compete for that title.
