Wow, talk about baroque. Thanks for that "lesson" on Henry James. Thank you, too, for telling us that a fictional character isn't actually real.

I assume "Clowntimeisover" isn't your real name either, but a persona you created. So, everything you said in that rant applies to you. How ironic. You haven't offended me at all, particularly since you didn't address a single one of my posts. I have, however, reported your post, as it is a personal attack on a member of the community and is off-topic.

Wow, for a guy who claims he "hasn't read" my above post and has me on ignore, he sure is obsessed with me. I would almost be flattered if his posts weren't so incoherent and weird... ;)

L.Strether is the name of the male protagonist of one of Henry James's "late" novels. Earlier in his career, James wrote in a more accessible style, but eventually his style became extremely complex and difficult. L. Strether's posts are essentially a weak parody of James's style. L. Strether is not a person -- it (not "he") is a persona. Yes, there is an actual human being who types his posts, but his whole point is that he is creating an online "character." It has nothing to do with him. Everyone here should understand that ... and stop bothering with it. He invented a character -- a snooty, obnoxious, contentious, unpleasant character who writes in a pseudo-ornate "fancy" style -- who has nothing to do with him, necessarily, as a person. Was he a teacher, as he says? Maybe -- but that would be the person typing the posts, not the fictional "L. Strether" who signs them.

Seriously, everybody -- I'm right about this. Please take it to heart when you read these posts by a fictional character invented by the person(s) who type(s) the posts. I have no more fear of offending "him" than I do of offending Huckleberry Finn (or, more appropriately, Tom Sawyer). And I block "him," because it's just too tedious and annoying otherwise. This says nothing about the person typing, who might be a wonderful guy; but the persona he has created is a well-known drag (to quote George Harrison in A Hard Day's Night: "She's a drag -- a well-known drag. We turn off the sound when she's on the telly and say rude things").

I kept waiting for him to say, "Sorry guys, but I've been so obnoxious as part of a study on Internet trolling. It was necessary for my research paper, and I apologize for any and all feathers I ruffled." However, I figure he would have come clean by now if that was the case, and I like your explanation much better!

In my house any hour is a good time for a nap. It is 4:53 am EST Earth Time and I am preparing for a nap as I type..

I have to say, "Clown Time Is Over" has got to be my favorite handle here on these boards. By the way,my name is Richard Milter and I never hide behind an alias.

wow -- thanks! that's very nice

I don't like to have an online presence under my own name (partly because potential employers check it and they can come to stupid conclusions), but I also am not creating a persona -- it's me (I know that this would be disputed by deconstructionists and others interested in literary theory and "the text"), but I try to avoid ending up as something you can find on google

============

BTW, "Clowntime Is Over," an Elvis Costello song, is an anagram of "I'm Elvis Costello now" -- because this was early in his career and that wasn't HIS real name, either

the song immediately preceding it on the album was "Men Called Uncle" -- an anagram of his real name, Declan MacManus

no, you won't find this info online -- I'm the only one, apparently, who has noticed, and of course I'm not permitted to share this obvious and interesting interpretation on wikipedia unless some douche from Rolling Stone puts it in a "source"
