Chicago Cubs Ready for 1963

PostMon May 25, 2015 8:06 pm

Chicago (AP) - While the Cub portion of the free agent draft completed Cubs General Manager Strut Pederson was all smiles when asked of the prospects of the up coming season. "We are absolutely loaded with talent. There may be a sport for two or three utility type this spring, but we are looking to do much better than our 62 campaign. Al Kline agreed to another contract. We were able to upgrade several other position as well". Pederson was referring to a new right side of the infield with Cash and McAuliffe coming over from the AAA Tigers.

Manager Jeff Kloster was speaking in glowing tones of new LHP Warren Spann. "The guys a sure Hall of Famer. We're lucky to have him this year."

After finishing a disappointing 11th in 1962 this sky is the limit for the North Side club. However, the rest of the division might have something to say about that.

The Reds Rejig
(c) AP Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Reds are bringing back most of their World Series Roster, but there are some new faces, and some fan Favourites have been traded away or been granted free agency.

Gone are fan favourites Smith, Foiles and Post, as well as strong fielding second baseman Bolling. Also gone are key bullpen aces Dombrowksi and Brosnan. Starter Lary is gone too.

But there are reasons for excitement. Rookie Pete Rose has looked really sharp in preseason, and figures to make the team. His preferred position is right field. If that's where he lines up, Frank Robinson will move to left. Rose can play all outfield positions, as well as second base, but the Reds have also brought in Jerry Lumpe and veteran Nellie Fox to replace Bolling.

Skinner hopes to impress as a slugger in left field. But the lineup card is crowded in the outfield, with Rose, Robinson, and star Vada Pinson in center. spencer is new at third base. Cardenas, Kasko, Coleman and Pavletitch are the only holdovers in the infield, while Edwards returns at catcher.

Mickey Lolich hopes to bolster the Red's rotation, while Henry, Woodeshick and Worthington make up the bullpen. "Woodsy and Worthy" are new to the club.

Purkey and Maloney hope to reprise their succesful 1962 campaigns, while O'Toole feels like he can improve in '63.

The Reds opening day roster vs RHP could be mostly new, with the departure of Lary, Foiles, Bolling, Zimmer, Smith and Post. Dreams are free in the Spring. But when opening day comes, will it play in Peoria? Or Chicago? Or Baltimore, Washington, or Pittsburgh ?
Put in that batting practice, boys!!!
