The Boston Bugle
(c) AP Fenway Paak (no R)

The defending East division champs Boston Red Sox are bringing back surprising rookie sensation Carl Yastrzemski. Yaz won the 1962 batting crown with a .351 BA and also added 44 HR and 109 RBI and will likely be heavily counted on again in 1963. Also returning are 17 game winners SP Gene Conley and RP Wilbur Wood along with Dick Radatz who saved 39 games for the Bosox in '62.

Gone for 1963 are fan favorites Pete Runnels who hit an amazing .347, Zoilo Versalles who hit 21 HR while manning the SS position and Rocky Colavito who hit .306 with 32 HR. Also gone are Dick Donovan & Denny Lemaster who were heavily counted on in the rotation.

But there are reasons for optimism. Rookie Rico Petrocelli will get a shot to be the everyday SS. Free Agent signees Camilo Pascual, Sam McDowell and Tommy John look to anchor the SP rotation this year. Catcher Jim Pagliaroni who disappointed at the plate in 1962 was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 1B Dick Stuart who is projected to flourish at the plate in Fenway Park. He has a lot to live up to in replacing Runnels. After the loss of Colavito an opening in RF was created and slugger Bob Allison was signed to fill that position.

Bob Tillman and Russ Nixon return as the dynamic platoon behind the plate. Smooth fielding Chuck Schilling returns at 2B as does steady Frank Malzone. Frank could be pushed for playing time by newcomers Felix Mantilla and/or Dick Williams. Mantilla and Williams should add plenty of depth and position flexibility to the lineup.

The Red Sox hope to have enough power in Yaz/Stuart/Allison to keep them close in Fenway Park. Again in 1963 the Yankees are the team to beat in the East. The 3M boys of Mantle/Maris/Mathews are a fearsome trio that anchors their mighty lineup.

The San Francisco Newspaper
(c) AP Somewhere Under the Golden Gate Bridge

The 1962 Giants were abysmal. Yes that's a word - look it up. It means terrible, awful and dreadful.

The 1963 Giants are hoping that two 19 year olds help them rise up the ladder in the West Division to at least challenge for a pennant. These two youngsters are Jose Cardenal and Joe Morgan. Both look promising as both offensive and defensive weapons for a team that could use both. In addition, another youngster, Frank Linzy, age 22, has also been added to replace Stu Miller who will be less likely to be blown off the mound at his new home in Baltimore.

Returning to anchor the Giants is Willie Mays, who tried but could not carry the team by himself in 1962. He will be joined by Willie McCovey who was mysteriously left off the 1962 roster by the somewhat inept Giant front office. "Big Mac" hopes for a big enough season to someday have a body of water named for him in the San Francisco area. Willie admits, "maybe not the entire bay, but a portion of it will do, maybe a little cove somewhere."

The pitching will be led by the one-two punch of 1962 16 game winners, Gaylord Perry and Juan Marichal. Perry has been accused wrongly of doctoring the baseball and has been quoted as saying that he would have been 32 and 0 last season and not a measly 16 and 16 if he could doctor the ball as he has been accused of doing. Marichal had no comment.

Thanks for the fine team write-ups for the 63 season. Based on these unbiased reports the competition looks tough.
