I love the Giants' write-up - especially about Gaylord Perry!

I started following baseball in the early 70's. I remember a magical season Perry had sometime in that era, where he started out with some crazy won-lost record. I remember lots of humorous features on his "spitball" during that season.

Love this game!!!!

Perry's consecutive winning streak was 15, in 1974, with Cleveland. Here's a list of the top pitchers' winning streaks of all time:

Pick 4-12 Cardinals - Hal R. Smith

Smith didn't play in 62-64. Is that a valid pick?

"The Flushing Folly: Official Press Release of the New York Metropolitan Baseball Franchise"
The Polo Grounds, March 1963

Skipper Casey Stengel met the members of the press today to discuss the second season of his franchise the Mets. "You know we may have lost 100 games last year, but I like to look at it as we won 62 games and the best player in baseball, Henry Aaron." Aaron, upset with the Phillies for making him play second most of last season, agreed to sign with the worst franchise in baseball because they promised he would play right field the entire season. Joining Aaron as newcomers to the Mets are veteran centerfielder Jimmy Piersall, whom Stengel is convinced that fear cannot strike out. Completing the newly revamped outfielder is longtime Brooklyn Dodger great Duke Snider, who came over in a trade for reliever Bob Miller. "The Postman is back and he will deliver!" crowed Stengel, referring to the Duke's former job as a postman in Flatbush.

Other newcomers to the Mets are starter Dean Chance, knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm and reliever Ted Abernathy. "I plan to see if he can pitch 162 games this year." Reliever Jim Roland returns for a second season in the Mets bullpen after leading the team in ERA in 1962.

The team is also bringing up some younger players, including second baseman Ron Hunt, who will bat leadoff. Veteran Charlie Neal will move over to play short. The corners will remain in the capable hands of Gil Hodges at first and slugger Frank Thomas, who led the teams in homers, RBI's and errors last season. Team MVP Richie Ashburn and veteran outfielder Gene Woodling opted retirement over another season in Flushing. "I told them to not let the door hit them where the Lord split them!" remarked Casey. "Besides we've got some real good youngsters coming up like Ron Hurt who likes to get hit by pitches, Cleron Jones who can hit, Tracey Dullard and Carl Wiley Coyote who can throw a ball or two...we will be fine."

Continue on, guys. I'll find a replacement when I'm back at the house.
