The Baltimore Sun
(c) AP Memorial Stadium

With the dawn of a new season quickly approaching, the 1963 version of the Baltimore Orioles hope to go one step further than their 1962 counterpart. Reaching the World Series in 1962 but falling to the Cincinnati Reds left the Orioles with a feeling of unfinished business. The Orioles hope to build on that success with a number of changes on the new team. Key returnees include Brooks Robinson, Jim Gentile, Jackie Brandt, Robin Roberts, and Dave McNally. Notable additions include shortstop Luis Aparicio, outfielder Al Smith, and pitchers Mike McCormick and Stu Miller. The latter hopes to fill the big shoes of departing All Star closer Hoyt Wilhelm. The big free agent addition to the team is left fielder Rocky Colavito, leaving the Boston Red Sox to join up with the Birds of Baltimore. Colavito’s arrival relegates top prospect John Powell to the minors once again. While Colavito should bolster the offense, the team will look to cover the departure of All Star catcher Gus Triandos with a trificta of new catchers, including Dick Brown, Jerry Grote, and J.C. Martin. Free agents Johnny Temple and Wayne Causey resigned with the Orioles to patrol second base, along with returnee Jerry Adair. The starting pitching will take on a lefty slant, with both McNally and McCormick being joined by George Brunet. Another lefty starter, from last year, Steve Barber, will likely move to the bullpen. Roberts will be the only right handed starter. While the Orioles hope to improve on last season’s success, it won’t be easy as their divisional opponents have bolstered their teams with a good crop of free agent additions. As the dawn of the new season yields to the call of ‘play ball’, the Orioles will be looking forward to another exciting season of great competition and the hope for a successful season.

Will someone please list Jake Wood as my fourth round pick? Struggling with cut and paste on borrowed laptop.

Thanks!

The Polo Grounds, March 1963

Skipper Casey Stengel met the members of the press today to discuss the second season of his franchise the Mets. "You know we may have lost 100 games last year, but I like to look at it as we won 62 games and the best player in baseball, Henry Aaron." Aaron, upset with the Phillies for making him play second most of last season, agreed to sign with the worst franchise in baseball because they promised he would play right field the entire season. Joining Aaron as newcomers to the Mets are veteran centerfielder Jimmy Piersall, whom Stengel is convinced that fear cannot strike out. Completing the newly revamped outfielder is longtime Brooklyn Dodger great Duke Snider, who came over in a trade for reliever Bob Miller. "The Postman is back and he will deliver!" crowed Stengel, referring to the Duke's former job as a postman in Flatbush.

Other newcomers to the Mets are starter Dean Chance, knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm and reliever Ted Abernathy. "I plan to see if he can pitch 162 games this year." Reliever Jim Roland returns for a second season in the Mets bullpen after leading the team in ERA in 1962.

The team is also bringing up some younger players, including second baseman Ron Hunt, who will bat leadoff. Veteran Charlie Neal will move over to play short. The corners will remain in the capable hands of Gil Hodges at first and slugger Frank Thomas, who led the teams in homers, RBI's and errors last season. Team MVP Richie Ashburn and veteran outfielder Gene Woodling opted retirement over another season in Flushing. "I told them to not let the door hit them where the Lord split them!" remarked Casey. "Besides we've got some real good youngsters coming up like Ron Hurt who likes to get hit by pitches, Cleron Jones who can hit, Tracey Dullard and Carl Wiley Coyote who can throw a ball or two...we will be fine."

Priceless!!
