And again it's not meaningless if the guy gets into scoring position and a single gets you a run. I know you need three, but you gotta start with the first one. ;)

Now, if you had said Ben Revere...

Answer from the manager:

it's set at aggressive, bad coaching by the first base coach or bad decision by Cain! too bad you can't modify base running depending on score of the game.

Could you post a link to your team? Then people could see if you should have had it on aggressive or not. I, myself, am wary of the setting, but I usually eschew pitchers' parks.

To HAL "aggressive" and "stupid" are synonymous.

Here's the link to his team, the team we're talking about, not a real speedy team

here's my team, no OF less than -1

His team is an AT&T team with 4 solid base-stealers and a few more guys who can steal. So, I wouldn't be surprised if he had his runners on Aggressive. As I said earlier, I pretty much avoid that setting, but it is a legitimate choice for his team and his park.

Obviously, with your team, I would hope you avoid Aggressive except in pitchers' parks...and even then, maybe.

I agree with you, especially with HAL I never set a team on aggressive,.. personally I would have his team set to "normal" (whatever in the HAL world that means), but w/ my OF arms I would not set aggressive with one 1-16, two1-15's and the rest 13 and below. It's not a fast baserunning team w all my OF's with minus arms

9th inning down by 3. The 80% chance of extra base is not worth the 20% chance of out #2. I would bet the majority of managers would not take that risk. It's bad baseball.

I agree no manager would. But a player .....

no way that would happen in a real baseball game. even 5% chance is too much.

I see this type thing in baseball games all the time. Broadcasters love to talk about stuff like this. Sports talk shows on radio and TV often bring this type mistake up. The reason is simple. Baserunning decisions are not necessarily made by managers or coaches. Often they get made by players in the heat of competition. Have you heard of Yasiel Puig?

It happened immediately following Puig’s RBI single that put Los Angeles up 2-0 in the third inning. With no outs, Puig attempted to move up 90 feet to second base ......

But hey if at first you don't succeed... Puig after being thrown out early in game tried again late. Check out the video.

So if the game engine is attempting to simulate real life ......

With all that said on the Cain attempt we need that play in context. It happened to your opponent so you may not be able to know if baserunning was set to conservative or aggressive. But I would be curious to know what it was set to.

bbfan did answer this:

I assume this meant he asked the guy and the setting was indeed on aggressive, mystery solved.

Jumping into the fray...

Taking a ride in the way-back machine to the Old Guard days, I seem to recall a heavily researched post about the base running settings. The conclusion, in a nutshell, was that each corresponding higher setting led to an equally corresponding greater percentage of runs scored.

Rephrased, the Very Aggressive steal and base running settings ALWAYS yielded more runs.

Now, without getting into the weeds of what the minimum personnel requirements would need be to optimize this situation, I (almost?) ALWAYS have my settings on Very Aggressive or at minimum, Aggressive. I could absolutely care less about a one game situation that goes against me when the preponderance of the evidence suggests that in the long run, my team will score more runs and more runs equal more wins.

I'm always happy to be on the opposite side of what everybody else is thinking, but I am a little curious to understand the opposition too.

What exactly is the line of thinking that leads a manager to conclude that Conservative is an overall better choice? Is it simply to avoid the one Big Bad Box Score Result that hurts the brain for the rest of that day?
