Re: How to get the next generation to embrace your game!

I had a feeling you'd be discussing my posts, Bombers, so I looked at your post. Keyzick, himself, began the discussion about other online sites:
keyzick wrote:Not to mention the revenue...how many apps do you see taking in $20 a team? I obviously gladly pay it, yet you'd think they'd be making a killing relative to the plethora of free apps out there.

So, you should be admonishing, not praising him. And my asking for an example of such a site wasn't a "trap." As I said before, I had sincere interest in these sites Keyzick mentioned...which obviously don't exist. Also, Robert LaTorre and many other posters have mentioned competing sites on these boards. You should probably go and admonish them about
"setting traps."

Look at this, Bombers. Here's Robert LaTorre discussing Action PC and OOTP:
ROBERTLATORRE wrote:I think for some of the managers there is a rub with the black box stuff. A big selling point for SOM that I've learned from other sim forums is that in SOM you can SEE the results (player cards, x charts, split cards, dice, hit and run tables, etc). It's not like Action PC, OOTP, or other games, where you are buying into the ability of the developer to come up with statistically realistic game engines and algorithms, with SOM you see every result and expect to.

Even in the CDROM game, there are always questions about the manager settings (i.e. anything "more often" or "aggressive" or "conservative") and the advanced fatigue rules. This is why a lot of players never moved off of cards and dice to the online or CDROM game.

It can be frustrating when you are used to defined results that can be tracked, and then have to use important strategy components that are black box..

So, other players obviously have also discussed other products comparable to SOM, and doing so isn't "setting a trap." Sorry, Randy, you don't get to re-write the forum rules for the rest of us.

No. I saw the red line indicating you'd posted; I didn't have to think about you at all. Thanks for reminding me, though, why I put your poor soul on ignore... ;)

P.s. Write what you want, Randi, I won't read your next post.

SOM online is hardly just an app with secondary sources of revenue. It's an on-line fantasy game service serving its customer every day for up to 67 days, which--at $20 per team--is only about 30-33 cents a day. So, they're hardly raking it in for every team.

It's this kind of lazy logic that keeps this place in perpetual limbo.

What services does SOM provide exactly? The whole damn thing practically runs itself ... other than the once a year they have to come up with new cards, what the hell do they actually do? Answer a question or two? And do they honestly even do that? What exactly are they serving these 67 days? Access to email somebody? Wow Amazing :o

The prices for this game are atrocious. I paid .99 cents for i***** on my iphone and have spent dozens and dozens of hours on it just this year alone without ever needing customer service. Oh and I'm sure if I did, there is an email I can use to reach someone.

This game has so much potential to set itself apart from the competition but at this point it has become an embarrassment of old farts who are holding it back from being the true game it could be. Stop making excuses, this place is run horribly and it will continue to go down hill until you open your eyes and see that you are all suckers for staying here and paying this ridiculous sum for a broken game.

You people are full of it if you believe this game is reasonably priced in this day and age. They HAVE to charge an arm and a leg because they NEVER get any new blood. It's just progressively getting worse every year with less and less giving a shit being obvious. How long can this model last?

Sell the thing to somebody who cares. (Why don't a bunch of you long timers pitch your money together and buy SOM away from whoever it is that's running it into the ground)

This nonsense about the game not being ridiculously over priced is just silly.
Do you really think teenagers want to spend 20 bucks on a game they've never played, that has a steep learning curve, that has no bells or whistles, that can only be played on windows? This place is still stuck in the 90s and it's just sad.

That wasn't "lazy logic." It was a perfectly logical and true statement showing SOM provides a particular service for a low price. If you actually want to show how it's "lazy logic"--anyone can just say it is--please show how.
What services does SOM provide exactly? The whole damn thing practically runs itself ...

No, it doesn't. SOM's programmers, engineers, and technicians enable it to run and manage and fix it throughout the season.

Yes, they do come up with new cards, and, as I showed above, they do the work that enables its program to allow us to interact with it and run games and drafts every night. That is a service that is definitely worth 30-33 cents a day. I wouldn't call it "amazing" as you did, but I would certainly call it substantial.

I have no idea what "i*****" is and what services it provides. I imagine it doesn't provide the same services or demand the same work load from it's employers as SOM online does, so you need to provide more information if you want your analogy to work. I won't, however, sing the praises of SOM's customer service or relations; they are not its strong points.
This game has so much potential to set itself apart from the competition but at this point it has become an embarrassment of old farts who are holding it back from being the true game it could be.

This is like the fifth time you've mentioned "old farts" and/or old people. You're beginning to show quite an obsession with the geriatric. So, I have to ask, how old are you...and why is age such an issue for you? I'm 46 myself, and the ages of my competitors don't concern me. Also, if you see the game has so much "potential," then you clearly believe it provides substantial services and have contradicted your erroneous "lazy logic" comment above. Of course, I already showed that.
Stop making excuses, this place is run horribly and it will continue to go down hill until you open your eyes and see that you are all suckers for staying here and paying this ridiculous sum for a broken game.

I made no excuse; I stated facts. I'm sorry you don't know the difference. And there's no bigger sucker than someone who rants and raves about a product he or she can't stand while continuing to use it and hang out on its forums.
You people are full of it if you believe this game is reasonably priced in this day and age. They HAVE to charge an arm and a leg because they NEVER get any new blood. It's just progressively getting worse every year with less and less giving a shit being obvious. How long can this model last?

You're getting quite angry, hostile and upset over a product you claim to disdain. Are you ok? Again, as I said before, If SOM is so terrible and unhinges you so, why are you still here? As you said yourself, there are plenty other options out there. I suggest you go try a few.
This nonsense about the game not being ridiculously over priced is just silly.

No, it's not overpriced. It's 30-33 cents a day. If you can tell me a similar product providing such service at such cost please do. As I said before, you are clearly upset and disappointed with SOM, enough that you would continue to rant and rage at it and its users. All that effort would probably be better spent on a site you actually like.

Just throwing out some ideas to make the game better... pulling this out from my arse so feel free to chop them up and give your opinion .... I have tough skin ;)

1. Make it cheaper : $7.99 a team or 3 for $20.00 : 1 credit for winning it all and that's it.
Cut out the 3 free credits with each season down to one and you can spread the savings around to new customers.
The goal is to get people having MULTIPLE teams. A guy who plays SOM 10xs in a year, is going to have way more memories, exciting victories, championships, more opportunities to meet other players in leagues and make connections with. You want people buying multiple teams every month or two, you want it to be part of their day to day routines.
Making the teams 20 dollars each can deter a lot of people who just want to "try it out and see how it is"

I would NEVER buy another team if I spent 20 dollars and went 5-16 in the first week. That person is never coming back. That person will never tell SOM stories to their friends an family. That person will never have the trill of winning a championship. There is a learning curve and you are probably going to lose a lot with your first few teams ... so you want to make the game cheaper and more accessible to the masses. 20 dollars per team is just an unacceptable business model if you want fresh blood. If you are really stuck on the 20 dollars, maybe have an "elite league" or something that costs more but has the old 2 credits, 1 credit set up and some other bells and whistles for those who are more experienced and willing to pay more.

2. Make the player cards collectable. Add some art work and a picture of the player to your cards.
These dusty old cards filled with numbers need to be more visually appealing.
Add some animations or sound effects to give the game some umph. This crap feels like we are playing on DOS.
And we need a much better message board that allows you to post pictures and videos. It's 2015 for crying out loud!

3. Stats and record keeping. This is an absolute must.
It truly is a shame that there is nothing of the sort here.
Shame shame shame.

4. Chat rooms, instant messaging in the league pages. Instant communication is key. If two people are in the league at the same moment, they should be able to shoot the shit or talk trash. The leagues have all gone silent and sad.
Camaraderie and communication are hugely important to the success of this game.
The multiplayer aspect should be one of the great highlights, instead it's zombie land in here.

I've got to get back to work, if I come up with some more I'll post them later. Thanks for listening.

They need to simplify the game or at least explain why something happened through documentation so newcomers aren't at a disadvantage. It's overly tedious to find explanation for some things.

Good lord! Multi-quoting should be banned.
