I gave an earlier example where I made a nice pickup of a player being dropped too soon. Here's a case on the same team where I made the bad drop.

I let Johnny Temple go after a brief but dismal start:

23 AB .130 .259 .130

It turns out he had his '57 card, by far his best. (.284 .387 .341)

Despite my bad move, I was very lucky. I replaced him with Billy Moran who also turned out to have his best card ('62).

Well, the season is over and the year of the mystery cards has been revealed. In this particular case, I was debating on whether to hold onto Rocky Colavito or let him go. After much advice to hold onto him, I instead, went ahead and dropped him. Now the big reveal!

His card was his 65' year and if you don't have access to the card, here are his numbers: .287/.383/.468 with a 4R balance rating...I would have bet the farm that it was going to be his 66' year.
so my itchy trigger finger got the best of me as his defense 2(-4)e5 and his potential offense would have been a huge asset. I totally lost out on that and made a huge mistake. His stats after 110 ABs were dismal: .164/.252/.200 1 HR and 1 double. Apparently, a bad start to a good card.

Even without this stud, I made the playoffs, mainly because of my pitching, and had a 3 games to 2 lead in the first round before losing the last 2 games of the series. However, what could have been if I had kept him... Also, no one else picked up Colavito after I dropped him.

The replacement that I finally got for Colavito was Willie Horton, after a quick fling with Rico Carty.
Horton's card reveal was his 67' year and those year's stats are: .274/.338/.481 and a 4R balance with a defensive rating of 4(-2)e6.

While his defense is not as good and his offense was not as good as Colavito, he was a slight decrease in value on paper. He finished his simulated year with these stats: 271 ABs .236/.292/.432 with 11 HRs and 33 RBI.

This is a great thread. Thanks for the followup. Most high priced guys are worth keeping as they are usable in some form. You can get hung up playing mystery card roulette and wreck your team. Making the playoffs is always good. Hats off to you.

Between the season you had with him and the season I had which the reveal showed his better seasons, next time I may be inclined to bite the bullet and hold him for the whole season and see if he tears it up in the 2nd half. He may be a habitual 'slow starter' in SOM! Thanks for giving us the final reveal.
