I vote random draft order (if we're voting)

Just a sidenote and only suggesting:
Geekor did a very similar theme and we had a second round (serpentine for fairness) where we picked 'any player' not associated with the 12 Franchises drafted. Enables us to possibly fill a weak spot on our team and to throw a bone to those picking at the end of Round 1.

Jeep, thanks for the feedback. I see your point. That's the benefit of the 2 franchise drafts I guess.

I think that a 2nd round of a single additional player wouldn't really move the needle though, with 18 rosters to pick from, everyone could get a top tier player if they want one.

I compared the average wins and run diff for the teams over the 8 year span and ended up with the list below.

Code: Select all
Team   Wins   Rdiff
NYY   92.8   0.68
BOS   87.8   0.59
STL   88.3   0.41
LAA   90.3   0.40
ATL   86.4   0.40
DET   86.9   0.33
LAD   86.9   0.31
PHI   87.5   0.30
TBR   86.6   0.29
OAK   82.4   0.26
TEX   84.8   0.23
TOR   80.0   0.09
MIL   83.1   0.08
CIN   82.1   0.06
SFG   83.4   0.05
NYM   78.8   -0.06
COL   77.0   -0.10
CLE   79.5   -0.14
CHW   78.5   -0.18
CHC   76.4   -0.18
ARI   78.4   -0.18
WSN   77.5   -0.20
SDP   77.1   -0.24
MIN   76.6   -0.24
MIA   75.3   -0.35
BAL   76.3   -0.39
KCR   74.3   -0.39
SEA   74.4   -0.45
PIT   73.4   -0.53
HOU   67.6   -0.85

What I am thinking to level the draft is to exclude the top and bottom outliers by run diff (NYY, BOS, HOU, PIT, SEA). That would leave 25 teams with a cumulative run diff spread from top to bottom of just about .80 runs/game.

Any thoughts from the managers that are signed up?

I don think that there is a need for that. I think there are enough cards for almost all the franchises to field competitive teams. With a 100 mil cap gms will have to keep some restraints on the players used. random generated draft order will be fine and simple.

If we were looking for a 24-team league, perhaps it would be necessary to exclude outliers. With only 12 franchises to be picked, though, I don't think that would be an issue. And as toronto50 says. the $100 mil cap will effectively keep the Yanks, for example, from trying to buy a championship. They will not be able to use all of their stars.

As Jeep mentioned, though, some of the franchises might have a gap or two that would need to be filled. I could support Jeep's idea of one additional pick in a second round -- or even a complete second round (serpentine) where we each select a team from the league we did not use in the first round, mixing and matching the players under our $100 mil cap, as needed.

its great to have some flaws on the teams. if we wanted perfect teams we could just play 140 million caps and have selection of all the cards. some organizations have flaws and that's what makes it a bit more interesting.

I agree with you, Toronto50, totally, except I ain't going to be the Astros!!! It's interesting reading the different ideas of leveling the playing field. Wouldn't it be interesting to rank the teams by payroll over the time period and ranking the draft accordingly? I don't mean to pick on the (damned) Yankees - after all, I'm a Red Sox fan, so don't have much to say about $$$$ spent unwisely. Anyway, however it shakes out, or we shake it out, this should be very interesting...........

I want to keep the franchise theme, I don't like players who never played for a franchise getting on that teams list. I suggest a compromise.

Round 1, pick your franchise; all franchises in play
Round 2, reverse order, pick any player who has at least 1card/season with your franchise (this would be the single exception, one time to the # of seasons rule. For example, the Angels could take Pujols from the Cards, even though Pujols has more years with STL

Also, please randomize the selection order

I have reviewed 20 or so of the top teams and think I can put together a competitive with all of them. there really is only a couple of unusable teams. if we keep changing the rules of engagement it just makes me lose interest. can we just keep it simple? I thinks its hard to recruit the last few players when the rules are not cemented.

OK, rules are locked in.

1 round draft
randomized draft order
All teams avail

Initial post has all rules updated

1 additional amendment, Chuck gets the Astros! (kidding)
