Lance, agree about Jack Z.

Mattingly is a mediocre-to-lousy manager but the decision to play Rollins over Seager belongs to Friedman and the front office. I can see the argument for giving Rollins a bit of rope anyway.

I'm not sure it was a mistake. Rollins was only supposed to be a 1 year rental until Seager was ready anyway, and he has stabilized the infield defensively.

I can see the logic there. No way they could know for certain if Seager was ready and cannot blame them for not wanting to rush him if they did not have to. Pretty sure they were expecting more offense than what they have got from Rollins though. I just remember watching LA when they came to Texas and thinking they gotta get more from that guy or call up Seager.

But there are also some reasons not to in addition to what you threw out. Once they bring him up they start the clock on his FA status. But then again I cannot see them not having him up from day one next year and bringing him up now I do not think would make a difference on the FA clock. Of course if they bring him up and he is not ready and struggles big time could take a hit on his confidence and if they had have released/traded Rollins short could become an even bigger black hole for them. I expect they are wanting to be certain that once he is called up he is there for good.

Possible the best thing that could happen for the Dodgers is for Rollins to get a minor injury that would allow them to put him on 15 day DL so they could call Seager up for 2-3 weeks with understanding he was going back down no matter what. Then he could get a low pressure audition. The Rangers got lucky in that manner with Gallo. They got to give him a taste of ML life with some exposure at third and the OF. With Beltre back once Hamilton and Deshields also return they can send Joey back to AAA without any hint it was because of the strikeouts. It was part of the plan from day 1 of the Beltre injury and only extended because of the Hamilton/Deshields injuries. He goes back to AAA with good knowledge what he needs to work on to return and stay. Seager might benefit from something similar.

Whether Seager is called up in September may be a big signal what they plan to do next year. He is called up consider it an audition for starting season in LA next year. He is left off expanded roster and may signal a few weeks of "seasoning" ala the Chicago kid.

Valen still fails to realize most scouts and organizations don't see Seager as a SS, but as a 3bman, which is the main reason he's not currently playing SS for the Dodgers.

As I noted earlier, Seager is 6-4, 220, with a bad first step, and poor range at short. He's apparently survived there because of his cannon arm, which won't work at the major league level. Considering Friedman's emphasis on defense at Tampa Bay, he probably isn't willing to trade Rollins' still valued defense there for Seager's subpar d. And if they are planning to play him at 3b, nothing will mess with his confidence more than failing first at Ss, where he's not particularly skilled.

If they do tire of Rollins' offense and actually take the defensive hit with Seager at SS, the left side of the infield is going to be brutal..particularly when Guerrero is playing.
