The Six Man SP Rotation

Picking up where the Carrasco super-starter/super-reliever thread left off, I put together a couple of experimental teams.

The first one is basically five inexpensive starters plus Carrasco, who will be slotted to start once every six games and available to relieve late in the cycle. The team is bolstered by overly strong defense ( 1s at C, 2B, SS, LF and CF, 2s everywhere else) in a pitcher's park.

The second one is an all SP/RP strategy, with the five strongest SP/RPs I could get, plus one cheapie. The idea will be to move thru the rotation keeping Fiers, Carrasco or Pomeranz available to relieve as much as possible, to assist the ultra low-budget $3.50 mil bullpen.

The offensive side of the experiment was basically targeting hits over OPS, to see if I can move fewer baserunners around more effectively in a pitcher's park, rather than stranding lots of "non-hit" OBP. The defense is reasonably strong (no 4s vs RHP) to improve the value-added proposition.

These are basically both pre-season, so we'll see how it goes in real time...

An interesting approach for 200x. I have done something similar several times in ATG where there are more good S/R pitchers available. Usually go with 3 RH and 3 LH * pitchers and then set per game starters based on opponent record verses LH or RH pitchers plus the slash line against each or sometimes road park numbers.

Mixed success. Mostly because it can backfire easily if you do not stay on top of the per game starters.

Exactly. And I take the easy wins in the other 2.

Carrasco didn't show up in the 9-1 win by Santiago, but I would have expected him in the overtime game just before that you lost.

In my own version of 6-men rotation, I had, on multiple times, one of my starter came up after only 3 games of rest to relieve. For example, see games 132 126 104 87 83

If you had forced Hal to use Carrasco, I would have expected him. But maybe the complete game tossed by Carrasco exceeded the number of pitches that allows the pitcher to relieve after only 3 games of rest.

Carrasco is set to relieve early and often in every possible setting. We'll see how it goes, plenty of baseball left to be played.

Just saw the super-advanced starting pitcher resting chart, for face to face games, and the chart says that for pitchers with no *, a start of 6 innings or more requires 4 days of rest. The on-line game is based on SADV pitch count system rather than innings, but one can imagine that the limit within which a reliever can reliever after only 3 days of rest is too high.

This probably explains why Carrasco didn't come to relieve in games 5 and 11.

He did help Santiago close out Game 12, though, for his first relief stint.

Edit: the pitches' limit under which a SP can relieve with 3 days of rest is probably NOT too high.
