HAL deviating from lineups?

PostSun Jul 12, 2015 7:52 am

HAL appeared to deviate from my lineups, and I am trying to figure out why.

I was playing 3 straight righty balanced pitchers (2R, 4R and 1R) so my right handed lineup should be used throughout. Ted Williams was injured the first 2 games, so HAL should make my preferred substitutions. My lineup chart settings are below. Sorry for the mess, the alignment all looks correct on the post as I write it. I pulled out the numbers to try to make it more readable.

I thought that with Williams injury, Averill moves from Right to Left field, Herman from DH to RF, and Baines in at DH. That is not too many moves, at least I dont think, and HAL has done that pattern before for me. But HAL put Simmons in left, and Otto Miller in to catch.

Any thoughts on this one?

For some reason I've never seen explained, HAL doesn't want to move a guy from DH into a position in the field. Maybe it's related to the rule that putting your DH into the field during a game loses the DH - if so, it's just messed up, but there it is all the same. I can't recall ever seeing HAL move a guy from DH to the field to cover an injury during a series, regardless of how I've set up my backups.

HAL won't move your DH into the field. Herman messed up your substitutions.

Please note that HAL will only go one deep in making a substitution. In other words, if Smith is backup for Jones, he will come in when Jones is hurt and then Smith's backup will play for Smith. If it's any more complicated than that, HAL just does whatever he thinks is best.

Also, I'm sure you know that, during a game, HAL does not look at your substitution list at all.

Follow up to this. Will HAL take out your DH if that player is the only sub you have at a position? I am thinking of a team where my backup RF would also be my DH, and those would be the only 2 players that can play RF. Will HAL pull the DH to start a player rated at the position, or would he put an unrated player into RF?

HAL will drop an unrated guy in there - he might use an outfielder if you have one available, but I'm not sure that's absolute. He treats the DH as sacrosanct, though.
