Howell no HRs allowed in 112 innings pitched

PostSun Jul 19, 2015 10:03 am

Anyone know the MLB record for most innings pitched in a season without allowing a HR? I know Greg Minton had consecutive years of 79.2, 91.1 and 84.1

Looks like Minton with 269.1...so sounds like it enveloped those seasons you pointed out

Howell tacked on 3.1 more homerless innings in the playoffs for a season total of 112 IP without allowing a HR.

Jose Bautista ended Wade Davis' multi-year real life streak at 125 2/3 innings.

Maybe this is a case of improved statiscal accuracy?

There are a few pitchers in the set whose homerun rates in real life were so low that, even with no homerun on their cards, the combination of the hitters cards to theirs give them a rate too high, so SOM uses a twist to improve statiscal accuracy. Not sure how it works though---does SOM change homeruns for doubles or for fly B?

In fact, probably not. Just got a look at fangraphs, and Howell is 44th among pitchers with 30+ innings with a hr rate of 0.37.

Interestingly, though, Davis, League and Herrera did not alloow a single homrun in more than 50 innings. But I wonder if the improve stats accuracy apply to relievers.

Yeah, I don't see it as a case of "improved statistical accuracy" for the whole set, either...or for relievers. To ensure statistical accuracy, they would have to return to their previous unfortunate practice of tampering with statistical results by altering and/or setting dice rolls. Considering they've asserted they don't do that anymore, I doubt they are. It's just easy to forget the huge spectrum of possible season performances most cards have, which gives them the abilities for such unlikely accomplishments as the posted Howell hr streak.

Probably just a perfect storm.
1) $60M no DH league missing most of the high priced sluggers
2) Home park Petco in a division with 2 PNCs and an AT&T.
3) Rest of league -3 Nationals, 2 more Petcos, Oco, Rodgers and Camden.
4) Howell faced only 2 BP HR chances.

Maximum Rules are special rules found only in the computer game (Online and CD-ROM) which enhance the realism of Strat-O-Matic's simulation of baseball by addressing certain limitations that are inherent in a card-and-dice game. They do this by slightly altering the results normally obtained from the cards to improve things like out distribution, opportunities to take extra bases, and upholding extreme performances like Dennis Eckersley's giving up only 4 walks in 73.1 IP in 1990. This doesn't say, though, that a regular SOM season is automatically set to these Maximum rules as default. If they are, then SOM has returned to their previous unfortunate practice of normalization. Considering they assured us they hadn't, players who have played since they made that assertion would be justified in asking for refunds. So, it would be interesting to hear what they have to say on the matter.

According to you, though, Marc, they definitely haven't returned to normalization through "Maximum Rules" or any other method:
MARCPELLETIER wrote:SOM has been water-clear with regards to normalization, this option available on the online game that has the effect to increase statistical accuracy. It is NOT operating anymore. Many years ago, SOM was using this option but it put it off when controversy started mounting when people realized normalization was on. You can further see in the super-advanced setting on the wiki page affiliated with SOM that the option is checked off.
