Jon Niese Throws Perfect Game

PostMon Jul 27, 2015 11:53 pm

Jon Niese threw a perfect game for my team the Rolling Thunder. The write-up only says "no-hitter" for some reason, but he only faced the minimum 27, and nobody reached base. He's obviously never thrown a perfect game for me before, but he's done well for a few of my teams for under 3 mil:

Something, something , something blind squirrel and nuts.

But congrats considering he's never likely to come close in real life, perhaps you want to hit the craps tables. Clearly had some fortuitous dice rolls. ;-)

Thanks for the congrats...and the minimilization... ;)

I'm not sure about the fortuitous dice rolls, though. A pitcher doesn't need a "fortuitous dice roll" to get a batter out.

:?: Strat is a game played with dice, if the rolls are 't fortuitous, you don't get outs.

And it wasn't meant as a minimization, more a lament that he'll never do it for the Mets :-(

Then, using your definition of "fortuitous," every dice roll that gets the result you want is "fortuitous," and you would have said the same if Clayton Kershaw had thrown the perfect game. I'm good with that... ;)

I thought you were using the other definition of "fortuitous": lucky. If that were the case, then Niese wouldn't have needed fortuitous rolls for a perfect game, since a pitcher--except for the awful few--doesn't need lucky rolls to get outs.

Yes it's fortuitous for any pitcher in this game to do it. I'd say Kershaw has a better chance than Neise based on their cards, but it's still fortuitous no matter the pitcher.
It's one of the things that drives me nuts with the Strat baseball game especially versus their fabulous football game. You can have Cy Young on the mound and if the dice are cold he can be battered into submission as much as any .50 schulb in the online game. You sense it more when playing the board game versus the online game so it doesn't bother me S much in this format.
The football game though, because of the chess match in guessing the offensive plays when you are on defense and calling plays on offense to out think your opponent, always felt like you had more control than just the vagaries of dice rolls.

If you've played both board games you know what I mean.

I'm not much of a football fan anymore and never played the SOM game, so I'll take your word for it. However, I never understood how people can get frustrated about the dice element of SOM baseball when the whole game operates on rolls of the dice. It's a bit like complaining about the crazy ball movements of the whiffleball when playing whiffleball.

Don't get me wrong, if it weren't for the dice the game wouldn't work as well as it does. Every pitcher has an off day, batters have hot and cold streaks and the dice element helps recreate those events really well. But I'm not sure why you wouldn't understAnd why someone gets frustrated when their ace performs poorly anymore than not getting frustrated/disappointed when the real life counterpart struggles. I mean we all know Chris Sale, for example, will pitch well in the majority of his games likely win between 18 and 22, but that doesn't lessen the frustration when you are sitting in he stands expecting him to do well and he doesn't and gets knocked out early. It's just human nature

I don't get frustrated because I know the game depends on dice, and I don't waste time getting upset over occurrences I knew very well could happen because of the essential make-up and probabilities of the game. It's like getting upset over traffic if you live in Los Angeles. So, getting upset over something you know is both natural and a possible to likely occurrence is counterproductive.

And it's not human nature for all humans. It's some humans' nature. Many people, including myself, do not get upset over likely occurrences, particularly in on-line games meant for fun, when we know they're the nature of the game. Having been raised by two scientifically-minded doctors, I definitely don't. Some, like you and others, obviously do...and that's fine.

How do you handle the day to day pressure of always being perfect ??

It boggles the mind.
