The Laser Show is signed thru 2021. I don't think we will see a new 2B for at least 3-4 more years.

Agreed. The expectations by owners for GMs and coaches turning around losing situations is shorter than ever.

It would be interesting if someone did a study on that; it's not really the case in baseball. The fact Ruben Amaro is still working, alone, demonstrates the immense patience of some baseball owners. In fact, many GMs--or Presidents of Baseball Operations--in baseball have been working at the job for 4-19 years:

Dan Duquette
Alex Anthopolous
Brian Cashman (17 yrs)
Chris Antonetti
Terry Ryan
Billy Beane(18 yrs)
Jack Zduriencik
Jon Daniels
Mike Rizzo
Ruben Amaro
Sandy Alderson
Walt Jocketty
Theo Epstein (Pres)
Neil Huntington
Brian Sabean (Pres, 19 yrs)

As to Cherington, I feel more for his never being fully handed the reins from the beginning than for his being replaced. Any GM forced to hire Bobby Valentine as manager deserves our sympathies. However, he had 4 years at the reins and, in one year, he burdened the Red Sox with four terrible and costly long-term contracts: the ones for Pablo Sandoval, Rick Porcello, Rusney Castillo, and Hanley Ramirez. Very few GM's--or executives in other industries--get to make so many damaging and costly decisions without it jeopardizing their job.

That being said, he might still have kept his job longer if Dombrowski wasn't available. But when a proven winning GM of Dombrowski's caliber is available, and you're justifiably unhappy with your current GM's (who probably needs more experience) decisions, it's not being hasty to hire that proven winner and demote your current GM. Cherington is a very intelligent man, though. I have no doubt he will learn from his mistakes and be an excellent GM for another team in the future...probably after some more experience as assistant GM or director of player personnel.

Point taken about baseball Jason, but in the NFL coaches are not given enough time. Hire the right guy and stick with him!

Really don't think that 4 years on the job for a GM is evidence of patience.

As for on the field managers, Ned Yost was hired In May 2010. There are only 3 managers that have been in their current job longer.

Firstly, 13 of the executives I mentioned have been on the job for more than 4 years. Secondly, why isn't 4 years on a job evidence of patience? It certainly is in many businesses, and it means the owner has given the GM/President a considerable amount of time to build and/or sustain a winning team. It's also more than enough time for a GM to make--as in Cherington's case--dismissal or demotion-worthy mistakes. In the cases of Antonetti, Zduriencik, and Amaro, the GM's (particularly Zdurienck and Amaro) have been given considerable time while achieving little success and/or making great mistakes.

As to field managers, I wasn't discussing them. I was discussing baseball executives and their career longevities, since they applied to the thread topic.

Dave Dombrowski's career record as general manager

Total 1867-2117 .469
6 playoff appearances, 3 pennants and 1 World Series title (Florida)

A proven winning GM? That is very much open to debate, less than half the years he has been a GM, his team have finished under .500. No World Series championship with Detroit in 12+ years.

How about some of Dombrowski's contracts, costly long-term contracts: Verlander for sure, V.Mart and A.Sanchez too early to tell.

You piqued my curiosity about turnover in MLB field managers, so I decided to take a look at and list their respective tenures. Here they are listed by longevity:

Mike Scioscia--16th
Bruce Bochy--9th
Joe Girardi--8th
Ned Yost--6th
Terry Collins--5th
Don Mattingly--5th
Clint Hurdle--5th
Bob Melvin--5th
Buck Showalter--5th
Fredi Gonzalez--5th
Robin Ventura--4th
Mike Matheny--4th
Walt Weiss--3rd
Terry Francona--3rd
John Farrell--3rd (temporarily replaced)
John Gibbons--3rd
Matt Williams--2nd
Brad Ausmus--2nd
Lloyd McClendon 2nd
Bryan Price--2nd
Kevin Cash, Dan Jennings, Pete Mackanin, Paul Molitor, Craig Counsell, A.J. Hinch, Craig Counsell, Joe Maddon, Jeff Banister, Chip Hale, Pat Murphy--1st

So 16 managers are in their 3rd season or later, 12 managers are in their 4th season or later, and an impressive 10 are in their 5th season or later. So, while there has been expected turnover, that is a pretty impressive amount of managers granted considerable tenure by their owners. If you or someone else would like to show how those numbers indicate poor patience by MLB owners on a whole, I'd be interested in reading the argument.
