Since it's been 7 hours since the first franchise pick, 6 years may be about right.

One last question (I hope).

Let's say the Padres are one of the franchises not chosen. Can I draft Craig Nettles and then have access to his Yankees card?

Good question. I'd guess yes. That makes sense with the rest of the rules where you can use a card not franchised to you. I'd think definitely you could draft Nettles and use his Yankee card.

Yes. he is carded to the Padres as well as the Yankees, so you can pick him in the 5 round draft, or you can pick him in rounds 6 to 15 of the autodraft if you choose (for your core players). IF the Yankees are not one of the franchises chosen for the league, you're safe to choose him in rounds 6 to 15 of the autodraft as a core player, because you're not competing with the Yankees in those rounds of the autodraft.

But if you should choose to wait until round 16 or later in the autodraft, you could lose him to any other player in the autodraft (ie the free agent autodraft rounds ).

If the Yankees ARE one of the franchises in our league (as is very likely), then you could lose him to the Yankees in rounds 6 to 15 of the autodraft, since the Yankees could also draft him in those autodraft rounds. So if the Yankees ARE in the league, and you as the Padres want to "lock him up" for the Padres, then you would need to pick him before the Yankees did in the 5 round draft.

Make sense?

PS - and YES, once you own a player's rights (Nettles in this case), and SINCE he is carded to the Padres for one of his card years, you can use any version of his cards, including a card year in which he played for the Yankees. And, whether you use Nettles' Padres card year or whether you use his Yankees card year, either way, he is considered a core player for the Padres.

Be careful not to drop a player once you own him - even for a minute. If you do, you can lose him. Free agency begins with round 16 of the autodraft, and continues from that point on. So when I say you "own" him, you still need to keep him on your strat roster at all times, or risk losing him to another player.

In my example, I'm not the Padres, no one has picked the Padres-
But their players are FA, so in the first 5 rounds I draft Nettles, to 'claim him", which also give me access to his Yankees card.
Clear as mud?

Sorry! I didn't understand what you were saying! And to be honest, I hadn't really thought of that question before!

I think the spirit of the idea in the rules (and literally what I wrote in the rules, and as Paul said avove), if the player (nettles) is carded to one of the 2 franchises that are not in our league, then that player CAN be picked in the free agent draft, even if he is also carded to a team that IS in our league. That sucks for the team who he IS carded to, but there are only so many players on the 2 non-used franchises available in the 5 round draft, and I don't think the rules should further restrict those "initial free agents".

So, if the Padres are one of the 2 unused franchises, any franchise can draft Nettles in the 5 round draft, because he is carded to the Padres. If the Yankees (to whom he is also carded) want to get Nettles, then they have to pick him in the 5 round draft before someone else does.

So let's say you have the Twins, the Padres are one of the 2 unused franchises, and you pick Nettles in round 1. You can use any card for Nettles, including a Yankee card, because you own Nettles. Furthermore, he is considered a core player for your Twins, because you picked him in the 5 round player draft or supplemental draft. That is the only way that a player like Nettles could be considered a core player for the Twins, by the way.

When you do your autodraft, you will list Nettles in one of your first 5 autodraft selections, because you took him in the 5 round player draft. And you can autodraft him with any card you want - a Padres card or a Yankees card , whichever you wish. He is a core player. Furthermore, you can switch cards at any time in the league, subject only to the add/drop 5/10/20 penalty (no penalty of course during preseason). But don't ever drop him without simultaneously adding his other card as part of the same transaction, so that you don't lose him by accident .

that's how I saw it too, which gives the more shallow teams another option.
