no he is not a Free agent immediately. He CAN, however be drafted by anyone in the 5-round FA draft. if he is not, then the only team that can put him in spots 6-15 on their autodraft card is the franchise he is carded to.
so, in your example, Gamble is carded to SD and ChW. IF CHW goes unpicked, then anyone can pick him as one of their FA draft picks in this 5 round draft we are about to have. And they can use any card. He then becomes their guy and as a FA draft pick counts as a CORE player. BUT, if he is not drafted in rounds 1-5 of the FA draft, then ONLY the SD franchise is able to put him in slots 6-15 on their Autodraft card. since no other team has a carded year of him. of course, as with any player not selected in the 5-round FA draft, he would become free game and anyone can put him on their autodraft card in slots 16-25.
side note (and hopefully obvious): if someone did select Gamble in the FA draft in the above example, it would count as 1 of the 2 Padre guys "stolen" for that round. Remember only 2 of your multi-carded players can be claimed in any 1 round of the FA draft. This picking of Gamble would be 1.
