Defensive sub

PostWed Sep 09, 2015 4:51 pm

One tweak that Strat needs to make is about defensive subs. Here is a game my team played last night:

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/ga ... 427406/908

The opposing manager must have Ted Simmons marked as "remove for defensive sub with a lead." Unfortunately, his backup Terry Kennedy was hurt. So Hal pulled Ted Simmons and inserted -- Dick Tracewski. I can only imagine the scene in the dugout. "Ted, we're taking you out for defensive purposes. Dick, figure out how to put on a mask and chest protector."

My guys did get a stolen base and throwing error out of Tracewski, but since McCovey then hit a homer, it didn't really impact the outcome of the game.

But still, it seems like a pretty simple matter to program the game to only take someone out for a defensive sub if there is someone on the bench who is actually a better defender.

Exactly. That "Remove for defensive sub" should read NO MATTER WHAT. If you mark that, HAL will follow your request perfectly and remove the player WHETHER YOU HAVE A CAPABLE BACKUP OR NOT.

It is much more beneficial to list your defensive sub on the Team Strategy page. That way, HAL will not remove the starter if, due to injury or another reason, a capable defensive sub is not available.

I only use the remove for defensive sub for players I am trying to protect from injury. Anything else and I just use the defensive replacements. Figure if the 4 I am allowed to list is not enough then I probably got more problems than just Hal.

I definitely didn't have remove for def sub on Sanguillin, and I know I didn't have him checked to move to LF
BOTTOM OF INNING 11

SUBSTITUTION at P: Steve Howe

SUBSTITUTION at C: Pie Traynor

SUBSTITUTION at 1B: Sandy Alomar

SUBSTITUTION at 3B: Spike Owen

SUBSTITUTION at LF: Manny Sanguillen

I asked the same basic question a while back and by doing what was suggested above totally solved the problem.

Basically, never check REMOVE FOR DEFENSIVE SUB. And ONLY USE the team strategy settings instead. Works like a charm.

I'd like to know what settings you are running with rz. Sanguillen is rated as a LF; just curious how that played out.

Sorry Andy, I just saw this..

It was a game where backup C (Lou Criger) ph for a pitcher in top of 11th, didn't get injured and wasn't subbed in a C (I hadn't noticed the LF rating for Sanguillen)...instead it's Pie behind plate, and spike Owen @ 3b.

As far as settings, nothing checked that should have made HAL do this, iust the common glitch of using your backup C as a ph then subbing in a non C behind the plate, have had it happen a few times..
