2014u Alphabet League - Zim13 to Load

We used to do this yearly (back when we had more people). I always enjoyed this draft, even though I screwed myself quite a few times.

Basically your draft by letter, say 1st is A, then 2nd is B, and 3rd is C, etc etc, drafting a player whose LAST name starts with that letter. The draft goes in order of the Alphabet. Once a letter has run out of players, we will skip that letter from then on. You can (and will) have multiple players with the same letter.

But you are no stuck with the letter every time! We have 2 kinds of passes that let you skip to the next letter. There is a Letter pass, where IF you have already drafted that letter previously, you can pass over to the next letter. There is also a Free pass, where you pass to the next letter whether or not you've already drafted the letter you are on. Each player gets 2 Free passes for the entire draft, Letter passes are unlimited. You can only use 1 of each pass per turn (i.e. most you could skip would be 2 letters per turn, using 1 Free and 1 Letter).

The draft is fun because with the cap, it makes for very interesting teams. Example draft: Player 1 - T: Trout; Player 2 - U: Utley; V: Free Pass, W: Wainwright.. and on and on

Also, as far as FA goes, all trades/drops/adds must be letter for letter (i.e drop an A for an A, not B for C then C for B). All players must keep 25 players exactly for the season (to match the letters they drafted(. Draft order would be in first come first serve for your draft spot. Once full we will run a random number (1-25 since there are no X) for the starting letter.

Be mindful of the cap though. As if you run out of cap space, and are forced to draft a player you can't afford, you will have to drop another player to make room for it. This rules used to state your most expensive player, but I find that too harsh and will deem it to be one of your top 5 players (in salary).

and this is NOT a snake draft right? I'm ok if it is.......but if that's right that it's not, then my first 2 letters (if no one passes) are E and Q ....ouch

Typically, I just go to the FA list and type in 1 letter (i.e. S) and get all the players starting with that letter.

Also, you can download the spreadsheet off of the website and sort yourself in Excel (or the like).

ok. didn't know it was a snake draft. that's probably better for me anyway. does that give any advantage to the guys at the end of the rounds (getting 2 picks in a row) in terms of their free passes. never done this before, so just asking.

Don't worry, free passes (even though you have) are used to skip letter you don't like. Don't expect the letter you're on tap for, ever. That is the only advise I can give. I rarely get what letter I was expecting in these drafts before.

The troubles letter will probably be e, i, o, q, u, y, z. e and o, there's enough for each person to get 1. the others there are only a small amount, you can try to skip them and force others to draft them, or just take the best one now and letter skip them the rest of the time until they are all gone.
