RIP Dean Chance

PostThu Oct 15, 2015 6:31 pm

I just saw an article in a two day old New York Times that he passed away on Sunday. I have been tempted to us his 1964 card a couple of times but never pulled the trigger. He was always one of those pitchers where it was fun to watch him pitch. I saw him on TV of course, only once in person. In 1970 at the end of his career, in Oakland when he was pitching for Cleveland. He got rocked pretty bad as I remember and suffered the loss. Wish I could have seen him in his prime. RIP

Yes, I noticed his passing, too. I actually use his card often - seldom disappointed.

I just used his "67" card in a 100,000 league and he helped me win a championship! He went 22-7 with a 3.74 ERA. Thanks for sharing, I didn't know he passed.

Great article Frank, I really thought the Angels made a mistake trading him to the Twins. I was a Dodger fan, but when Chance came up the Angels played at Dodger Stadium so I got to see him pitch a time or two, but I was just a 9 or 10 year old kid and they were the other team in my city. The team moved to Anaheim when I was 11, and Dean was traded the next year. Good pitcher, and from the article it seems he was a good guy too.

Thanks for sharing that story from the Mansfield paper, Frank. It revealed much I did not know; he was quite an individual.

Thanks, Mike. A marvelously written obituary--as good as, or better, than any I've read in the NY Times.

i'm going to use his card on my next team! RIP Mister Dean Chance. it's crazy how because of this silly online game, when the great players of the past leave us, Chance and Yogi recently, it almost feels like a family member or good friend. i dunno, i just dunno
