Cap Management

PostSat Oct 24, 2015 11:00 pm

I have a general theory for managing my salary cap that works pretty well.

For caps of $140 million or below, I subtract $6 million from the cap and divide by 13 for a no DH league or 14 for a DH league. This generates a "salary unit" that becomes my average salary for each position in my batting order, and also for my 4-man rotation. If I want to use a 5-man rotation, I take 80% of that number for my average starter. The other "unit" I allocate to my top 3 bullpen guys. This allocates your cap about 36-38% for pitching and the rest for hitting (ignoring the cheapo bench guys).

You can go a number of different ways with this, I often have 3 hitters above average and 3 below. This works pretty well except in bomber parks, where it is usually advisable to skimp on SP and load up on bullpen and your lineup. The

It's a very useful tool for capped live drafts - grab 3 or 4 stud hitters and 1 or 2 stud starters, then figure out how much you have left for the rest of your squad.
