I'm Ok with dumping the lottery, for the following reasons:
1. The medicine is worse than the illness. The lottery is not likely to deter a team from tanking (see below), but it is likely to penalize a truly bad team that randomly loses the first overall pick.
2. Our group of managers tends to represent some of the best in online strat. While we might trade current value for future value (this should be OK), we are very unlikely to deliberately lose games ("true" tanking).
3. I think most of us would agree that this group takes pride in their victories, and takes umbrage at their losses. If we had a situation where true tanking was occurring, it would likely be obvious to all of us, and could be dealt with by other actions of the commissioner.
Re #1, I think I was the random beneficiary of the first overall pick one year, or maybe the second overall pick. I accepted the benefit, but it didn't feel right to me (if I can say this now). I would rather see the team with the worst overall record reap the dubious but tangible reward of the first overall pick.
