I'm playing in a mystery league. Occasionally, I look at the GB FB stats to see if it sheds some clear light on what card a player has. Sometimes it does shed some light on it, although I would never use that as a way to determine a player's card identity all by itself, without some other corroborating stats to help, or injury info.
But it got me curious as to what's included in each type of "out".
I looked at the stats for a SP who has only one start so far, and only 1 game played. He pitched 6 innings. Of the 18 outs, one was on a sacrifice bunt, and the other was an outfield assist. He allowed 8 base hits - 5 singles, 2 doubles and 1 homerun. As it happens, he had no strikeouts, which removes one variable from the question.
Of the outs (other than the OF assist and the sac bunt), there was 1 popout, 1 lineout, 1 foulout, 5 flyouts, and 1 sac fly. There was also 7 groundouts. 16 outs, plus an OF assist and a sac bunt makes 18 outs, equals 6 IP.
The stat page shows 13 Gb and 12 FB.
The problem is that there are only 8 groundouts (including the sac bunt), and there are only 9 flyouts (incl popouts, lineouts and foulouts), compared to the stat page with 13 GBs and 12 flyballs.
It seems to me that the way to reconcile this is to assume that strat treats all singles as groundballs, and all extra base hits as flyballs. That would make the math work, and the stat page "right".
Has anyone else considered this, or know the answer?
