A couple of years ago, I had to cut Dayan Viciedo to promote a prospect. Dayan got taken in the first round. Did I help somebody rebuild? No, I pushed that manager's rebuild back a year.

The reason that there is nothing but scrap available in the 8th, 9th, and 10th rounds is that by that time 810 players are on rosters. The fact that the league in total might have Kris Bryant, Eddie Rosario, Arodys Vizcaino, or any of the other dozen or so first year prospects worthy of being promoted simply means that those picks are being devalue by about 10-15 slots.

I'm also in the original TKL and there I plan to be promoting Byron Buxton this year not because he's going to help my team much but because I want to open up a 3rd slot for yet another prospect for my rebuilding team. The prospect draft is where teams are built, not the 8th round of the FA draft.

These points are very well made.

if the FA draft is opened up to all players who have appeared in the bigs you can rebuild with late round picks by grabbing the cup of coffee guys....
I took D Pompey, J Polanco, M Taylor, and Domingo Santana in recent drafts hopefully they will pan out in the long run

Yes, ghost, but those are the guys who become high first round picks in the next draft when they have good seasons. If we take guys like that out of the pool, then the whole nature of this league will be stood on its ear.

One solution to allowing teams to rebuild faster would be to further restrict player (and therefore FA draft) eligibility by having higher innings and AB or PA limits for players in our league. That would restrict your chances to grab those types of guys with late round picks, but would extend the really good part of the next FA draft to maybe 30-40 guys instead of 15.

But really, building a team from the scrap heap to contention with this rules framework is a multi-year process, and there's not much to do about that short of drastically reducing the number of keepers. There are leagues here like that, but I'm not a fan.

The problem is that there are usually about 20 guys (at most) who make a significant contribution to any given ML team in a season. That's a maximum of 20 x 30 or 600 guys worth having. With a 24 team league, with 20 keepers, that means anything immediately useful that you get after the 5th round of the FA draft is a miracle. Whether somebody else uses their 9th and 10th round picks to activate Carlos Correa and Kris Bryant (I'm talking about you, Ed) is totally irrelevant to your chances to rebuild your team in the long haul.

Where you really have to rebuild a team is in the prospect draft, as you said rburgh.

IMO the rule is more to manage competitive balance than it is to help the poor teams rebuild.

By forcing promotions before the draft you ensure every team is starting each season with only 20 players. If you allow promotions after the draft, any team could (theoretically) start the season with 30 players (20 keepers plus 10 soon to be promoted prospects). It's simply a means of dispersing the talent throughout the league and functions similar to a salary cap.

It also helps encourage the hot stove/trade market, although having any number of keepers would probably do the same thing, just the value of the return would be affected.

Anyone need a closer Huston Street - 1.16 whip

or set up Pat Neshek - 1.12 whip

or both

Not looking for much -- a 3rd/4th round FA pick or a decent prospect.

I would like to trade for a shortstop and a closer. (Or I'll have to find them in the free agent draft). If you're looking to deal, make me an offer please. I would be happy to trade picks. I might consider trading a prospect, but I'd rather not. Valencia could be available. Relievers could be available for the right deal.
