am i right that the carded only vs mlb vote is only important for the initial fa draft? after that aren't they just all prospects. or does a prospect lose that status once he plays in a mlb game. or is that what we are voting on?

so I really think we should decide first if we are using prospects? if so, then I'd vote for carded only for the initial draft and let the non-carded be prospects.

So I signed up for this and am very excited. 13 years of Strat, 20 years of fantasy, etc... I hope to bring something to this league while learning a bit also, as it is my first "Keeper-draft" league.

With that being said, can anyone direct me to a resource of where to learn more about terminology/impact for votes such as these or, in the alternative (although a bit more cumbersome), for votes that are proposed could it be explained in a way that takes into account the "newbie" status that I (and others?) bring to the league.

Hey Irish! Welcome to keeper leagues! Personally I love this format and the satisfaction of building a team over a long period of time.

I would recommend first, taking a look at the rules of some existing leagues. As others have stated, the basics are generally the same, with a few details here and there that are different. Here are a couple of links to active leagues rules pages:

The first thing we are talking about in this initial vote pertains to something like Rule 2 below:

Initial Draft:
1) The initial draft is a 31 round live draft and the clock will start at 10:00 am EST the day after the draft order is established. Rounds 1 through 30 are for players; Round 31 is for the stadium.
2) Only those players who were issued SOM cards this year and appear on TSN"s website are eligible for the initial draft.
3) The initial draft is serpentine; all subsequent Free Agent drafts are non-serpentine based upon the previous season's regular season records and determined by a lottery (see annual spring draft section below).
4) Draft picks are tradeable.

So for example can Zach Wheeler be drafted? He played in the majors in 2014, but missed all of last year with TJ surgery, so he wont have a 2015 card. Do you prefer these types of players be eligible for the initial draft or would you rather just keep it to players with 2015 Strat cards?

Very helpful and thanks. That being said, at least for this particular vote, I think I will abstain. Let the "seasoned" owners figure it out. Mention this because I don't want my inactivity to reflect non-participation. And don't worry, I am not one to abstain on a regular basis!

I declare that we all love to draft
and will go with the following prospect and roster rules:

6 prospects per team
prospects are by definition all players who have not appeared in the MLB but are signed by an MLB club

once drafted Prospects can remain on the prospect roster for 2 years at which time they must be promoted or cut; trades do not effect the prospect deadlines

Any and ALL players who have ever appeared in an MLB game may be drafted in the annual Free Agent draft...
