so much to think about
I think we ought to use unleashed as with 24 teams the more the merrier...
carded vs uncarded is moot; no MLB experience =prospect MLB experience = Free Agent....

I'm with Cal

Being forced to cut or promote prospects once they are carded makes sense. Being forced to cut/promote them before that doesn't, at least not with 30 man rosters.

that isn't in the rules
prospects are prospects for 2 years or you promote them....
carded vs uncarded is not in the rules

1)Prospects are defined as any player signed by a MLB team who has not appeared in a MLB game.
2) Teams may have a total of 6 prospects .
3) Propects remain prospects for 2 years. After two years prospects must be promoted or cut. i.e. drafted in spring of 2016 must be promoted or cut in spring of 2018.
4) A four round Prospect Draft will be held immediately following the Free Agent draft.
5)The 2 year clock follows the player and is unaffected by trades
6) Prospects who are cut will go to the Free Agent Pool if they have played in the MLB; those who have not are eligible to be drafted as prospects again and recieve a new 2 year window.

we could go three years but most leagues have a 2 year window.
but as written it has nothing to do with carded or not carded; it is simple clock, someone could be drafted this year carded the next (but suck) and still be a prospect with the hope sophomore season would be better (see Boegertz as recent example)

I think many prospect leagues use a rule such as.... he remains a prospect until he sees major league time at which point he must be promoted or dropped. some say until he has a card. There have been many prospects that took more than 2 years to make it to the show. With a max of 6 prospects, you'd have to make a decision on them sooner or later anyway.

I understand.

I just think it makes more sense to force owners to cut/promote players once they are carded. That way no one can stash active players on their prospect roster.

Forcing owners to cut prospects who have not been carded after 2 years could have a trickle down effect on roster spots, it also discourages anyone from drafting young players since very few prospects make it through the minors in 2 years. If a team makes an investment ( in draft picks) why should they lose the value of the pick after an arbitrary amount of time?

I don't really see the counter argument is my point.

And I don't want to speak for Cal, but that is how I interpret his comments.

plan to start shortly after the new cards drop

unless there is a groundswell to start sooner...

for now I would like folks to look over rules to see if we left anything out ....
and send me email info etc to further communication as we get this thing going...

You interpret correctly. I feel the same way. As long as you are willing to devote a prospect roster spot to a player that hasn't earned a card, my preference is that we be able to keep them in our prospect list. Prospect draft picks certainly have less value if they are a two year gamble. Look at a guy like Byron Buxton who has used up more than two years of 'top prospect' status to finally earn a card. By these rules, if you had drafted him pre-2013 when he was rated #10 by Baseball America, you would have had to cut him before he ever got a chance to play for you. :?: :?: :?:

I am not sure I understand the logic behind wanting to limit uncarded prospect ownership to two years, but if someone cares to explain why it is a good thing, I will hear you out. Otherwise, I'd be happy to craft a proposed rule change for a vote before we draft.

I am in several keeper leagues and none has a prospect rule as punitive. If anyone is in a league with this particular prospect limitation, what can you tell us about how you like it in practice?
