So I can pick the Astros I get 13 additional draft picks?

Unfortunately, that is correct. I probably should have ruled out the Astros because they have so few carded players in the 80s (and/or maybe they had a terrible farm system). But, I didn't do that, so the Astros are available if you want to switch to them.

Except that if he switches to the Astros then the people who picked after him also get to reconsider their picks, simply based on the fact that the Mets weren't available to them.

You can guess that with a name like Houston Met Fan I am torn. But I will play with my heart rather than my head and keep the Mets.

Besides I don't want to disrupt the way the draft went on account of me not understanding the rules..

Trading is allowed; however, you cannot use trades to alter your number of draft picks; for example, if you only have 2 catchers, you can't trade a catcher unless you receive one in exchange.

So, trading is ok, but the trades can't alter your number of draft picks. Also, each team needs to draft (or trade) so that they have a legal team for the autodraft.

As another reminder, especially for the new GMs, after the message board draft complete, there are no free agents. If you do not have exclusive rights to a player, then he cannot be on your team.
